Overseas Filipino Women "Kapit Bisig" Conference in Montreal
Link arms, raise fists and be counted! Kapit bisig at magkaisa!
On June 16 and 17, 2007 overseas Filipino women of Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa will meet in Montreal to discuss, build and bond together and to take action in supporting the struggle of our sisters for national freedom and democracy in the Philippines.
Filipino women are an integral part of the Filipino people's struggle for national and social liberation that the Filipino people are currently carrying out with deep passion and determination. In Canada, Filipino women had supported and continue to support and participate in the political campaigns and mobilization going back to the dark days of the Marcos dictatorship to today's repression and political killings under the GMA administration.
Our sisters and comrades in the Philippines have been experiencing the vicious blows of extrajudicial killings perpetrated by the current Arroyo government. Already, over 80 women leaders and human rights activists have been killed with impunity. Women and children continue to be abused, raped and trafficked in order to support the country's ailing economy. Filipino women, who make up over 65% of all overseas Filipino migrant workers, are forced to go out and worked under extremely exploitative conditions in order to survive. They have become part of the number one export of the Philippines today.
We can talk, discuss, laugh and cry together but all these can be transformed into collective action so that we can truly be proud to be part of this historic struggle and resistance of the Filipino people.
Hear the stories, struggles and resistance of our women community leaders and activists as they continue to support and participate in the national and democratic struggle of the Filipino people today.
