So...yeah...I have a son. His name is Brody. He is beautiful. He was born 08/03/08 at 1226pm via c-section.
I was admitted to the hospital on 08/01/08 because I had preeclampsia (high blood pressure that can lead to organ failure) and the doctors induced my labor. Uunfortunately, my son had other ideas...he would not come out. I went through over 36 hours of labor never to dilate more than 4cm. I wouldn't let them give me the epidural until Saturday night right before they broke my water hoping to speed things up. Finally my doctor came in at 1130 Sunday morning and said that he was probably never going to come out on his own and it was safer for me (and him) if they did a c-section and went in to get him. I of course (after the last 36 hours) was exstatic about this prospect and 45 minutes later my belly was open and at 1226 he came out kicking and screaming with a bruise on the back left side of his head where he had gotten stuck. Apparently he was head down, but facing the wrong way and kind of sitting diagonally at the top of the birth canal...not a good way to come out. He passed the Apgar tests and was perfect in every way. After four days my blood pressure finally stabilized and they let me go home (last thursday).
I was terrified the first couple days...I didn't really feel confident about this new job until two days ago. And no one warns pregnant ladies that a couple days after they give birth, their hormones take a nose dive. Multiply PMS by about a hundred and this is how you feel after giving birth. It is not fun...especially when you're trying to learn how to breast feed (gave up on that, and I don't feel guilty), and only getting 3 hours of sleep at a time if you're lucky. The first week was hell...but it's gotten much better. Now he'll almost always sleep for 3 hours at a time...once in a while when he can sense that Mommy and Daddy can't take anymore...he'll sleep for 4 hours.
The worst part is that Chris has been working every day...so I'm by myself with the baby unless I ask someone to come over. He's really good about letting me go to sleep as soon as he gets home and taking the bulk of the late shifts...but i miss my husband. We've seen each other...but it's usually cause one of us is watching the other one sleep.
This too shall pass...give us a few weeks...once baby boy is sleeping for 4-6 hours at a time on a regular basis things will get better...I just don't know how I'll ever go back to work...
