Meditation on coffee

I know people rant and rave about the ridiculous coffee sizes a lot, but I'm going to share my two cents anyway. Because my story is somehow unique and different right? Right.

I've been meaning to ask opinions on this anyway. We all know the names on drinks have gotten crazy, it's like big, Really Big, and OMG BIG! And this is confusing, just call it small, medium and large, there are 3 sizes.

At Panera the other day I saw what I feel is the oddest name to date. They have 2 sizes for frozen drinks. Small drinks are Grande, weird but I'm used to it. But a BIG drink is Largo. Anyone who has been a musician will probably know that songs labeled Largo are played slowly and dramatically. The word makes me think of plodding feet. Did someone think that because it looks like Large it would make sense? Do they pronounce it Large-O or something? Because I really can't understand why you would use the word for slowly played music to describe your biggest drink.

And on a related note, I stopped by a Starbucks yesterday, and wanted to get a small mocha. Which is called a Tall. But in my gut reaction to order the tiniest one, I didn't say Tall. I said small or short or something, and got the not-on-the-menu-8-ounce mocha, which I've heard tell of but forgot existed. I didn't want that one. It was so tiny that I couldn't even put the 'java jacket' on the cup, so I had to carry this tiny hot cup around campus with me. Explains why it was so cheap though. It's like the All-American Meal at McDonalds - you have to know to order it. But I managed to order it by mistake because it's a RATIONAL name for a size of coffee, unlike the Venti. or the Trente.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on LARGO. Is it just me?
