i'm actually up late enough for conan's monologue.
i don't know why but i can't sleep.. totally weird because i am exhausted and need to get up early.
so i will take this opportunity to write about something rather scary ..
this afternoon a mom showed up at our camp to pick up her son who actually never showed up.. she said that her husband had dropped him off at about 7:50 this morning .. however, her son had never been signed in to our camp. he was actually in my group, and so i knew he had not been there all day, as we keep track of our kids at all times (we take roll about five times a day.. its kind of ridiculous). well, at our site there is also another camp in operation through miller community center, a camp that i have always found to be wild and out of control. so we figured maybe he wound up there. people often wind up over there first, but then are re-directed to our camp. well, sure enough, that's exactly what happened..
now here's the scary part. he was not supposed to be there, however, they obviously did not have any kind of sign-in/sign-out sheet and had no way to keep track of all their kids. otherwise they would have noticed that they had a kid who was not actually supposed to be there. he was there ALL DAY and no one noticed. and the reason the dad wasn't re-directed to our camp? well, there was no one to re-direct him.. there was no staff there when the boy was dropped off, and several children were there waiting before a staff member arrived. i have to admit, it worries me a little that the dad dropped the son off in an unsupervised area.. however, i'm pretty sure that a staff member was supposed to be there at that point..
after that disaster .. it made me incredibly glad i work for the camp that i do .. because we actually do what i would consider an incredible job of taking care of these kids and making sure they are safe .. and in the right place. :)
