Geek Question alert .... UPDATED
ok.  So I'm connected to the secure wireless network, no problem.  It's an NTHell cable modem via a D-link Acess Point.  This (Dom's) computer is connected to it just fine on IP 192.168.0.100 using DHCP and ipconfig tells me the gateway is, unsurprisingly, 192.168.0.1.  However - My computer fails to get an IP ( Read more... )

Have you checked to see if its filtering on MAC?

Are you suggesting that the modem, or the AP are locked down to certain devices defined by their MAC?

I presume I'd have to log into the config to figure that out?

Yes, probably the AP. And yeah, you would.

If the AP was filtering by MAC address, wouldn't it just refuse the wireless connection in the first place? I can connect to the AP etc, it fails at the point of assigning the IP.

I don't seem to be able to log on to the AP anyway, so it's a somewhat moot point :(

Mine (a linksys wrt54g) works by not DHCPing to you, but if you can't login to the AP then it's probably not possible to configure it so it's unlikely to be that.

Is it definately an AP and not some sort of wireless routery thing?

I Stand corrected - It's a Wireless Routery Thing [tm] :)

Ah, in that case it almost certainly has an admin interface of some description and the possibility to do MAC filtering. I suggest you Contact Your Network Administrator.

lol - they're in France, but there's a slim chance Dom might remember the login to the router off the top of his head. I'll text him.
Cheers for the advice. Get your arse to Brighton and I'll ply you with drinks ;)

I'm not saying that's definately the problem, but given two otherwise similarly configured computers one of which works and one of which doesn't...

Brighton aye? How far is that from London?

Oh, you could test this if you're in the dark ages and their pcmcia adapters by switching the one in the working machine to the busted one.

one is a USB dongle affair (the one that works) mine's an internal adapter - so I could possibly plug the USB adapter into my computer.

For the moment tho, I shall hang my laundry and go to bed - live life on the edge, that's me!

50 minutes express Victoria to Brighton, or slightly longer but cheaper from London Bridge.
