I have been listening to my music and have noticed that some of the songs I have on my playlist give me shivers or make me smile. I can't see any correlation between these songs. Except that they are all in major keys (perhaps, this is speculation) and that they aren't angry or sad or longing or anything. They are about love, maybe. What is it about music that lets it envelope you and make you feel so good? Why is it that when you sit at your computer in silence you can't stand it? Why do you go to put music on? Why does that make it better? Sometimes I write without music on and it seems like each second is a week, but when I put on some music I will look back after I'm all done and realize I've been writing a silly story for an hour and a half and feel so good.
Some of the songs I've been listening to that make me shiver and smile are Grind by Down With Webster, Daylight by Matt & Kim and I Don't Know by Lisa Hannigan. These songs are so amazing, not for any reason that I can identify, only in that they make me feel good. I would like to give up cigarettes and alcohol and drugs and listen to beautiful songs for the rest of my life. I would like to make beautiful songs, but I do not think that I am able. There is something about these songs that is unidentifiable. I am a person who is like a paint-by-numbers artist who needs to know the ingredients. I will measure one cup of E major, and two tablespoons of acoustic guitar and so on. These songs are more feeling, and I do not have that feeling.
I love the sound of acoustic guitar. There is something about it that is emotionally resonant. It is more real than electric guitar. It is like the guitarist is putting himself into the music through his guitar and there is no piece of machine in the way to stop him. There is the sound of each string being strummed, with the eighth of a second between each one. It is like you can almost feel the reverberations of the maple or rosewood and the it is the most beautiful thing. I would like to be able to play the acoustic guitar in such a way that makes people cry and smile.
