link Character Personality:
Ryuuji is a lying liar of a bastard who makes sure that people know what he is and then tells them when he is telling a lie. Or not. Like all known members of his family he, too, is an onmyouji, a professional expert at youkai exorcism. As such they act as “the police of those who do not belong in this world” and believe that all youkai are “absolute black/evil” and that it is an onmyouji’s duty as “absolute white/justice” to destroy them on sight.
However, while most of the Keikains and especially those of the upper tier can be compared to noble wolves who think that it is up to them to wager their lives in order to protect humanity from much stronger opponents Ryuuji …is not. Rather than a wolf Ryuuji is that kind of certain mangy mutt who takes it up with bears and dragons, not because he’s strong enough to take them out, but simply because he’s mean like that. Mean and badass about it. Ryuuji fights and lives with no holds barred, no mincing of words or attacks and one can always bet for him to use everything to his advantage, even simple deceit.
As a person he quickly ends up giving people the impression that he is a downright evil, grumpy manipulative bastard who lies through his teeth and who is an abusive sadist to boot, at least in regards to his little sister. This impression is mostly true and Ryuuji does little to change what people think of him - on the opposite, he is often seen acting in a way that indicates that he even wants them to think nothing but the worst about him, be it the way he treats people that he has saved, family members, school mates or opponents. There are several reasons behind this, one possibly being that he doesn’t want people to get too involved with him since his occupation as onmyouji makes doing so dangerous or that he, like all male members of the main family, carries a curse to die early. Or maybe it’s because he simply is no nice person and seems to like humans just barely more than most youkai that he deals with, even while he keeps risking his life in order to protect them (the humans mind you, not the youkai).
Another important thing about his personality is that it is this very lack of moral barriers that allows him to become a force to be reckoned with even though he has comparatively little spiritual power to fight with. Being a person who lives and breathes for his job, Ryuuji is a ruthless trickster who fights with any means necessary be it deceit, psychological warfare, direct attacks or shikigami and onmyou art. Throughout the series Ryuuji proves repeatedly that he is as great with tactics as he is with on the get-go operations and that he is able to quickly analyze and then turn just about any situation into an advantage. Being like this, he often succeeds in garnering grudging awe and even respect from the people who see him in action, even if they tend to disagree with how exactly he does things. This shows for example when Rikuo starts to nickname him and his constant sidekick Mamiru as “the tricksters” as both a jab and sign of grudging respect - as a jab after he only barely managed to survive their first encounter and later on in the Kyoto arc with a note of respect when he points out that even though the situation is dire, they still have guys like them running around and fighting against their shared enemy. In the same vein Ryuuji is widely respected within the main and side houses of the Keikain family and has even gained the reputation of being a genius in battle even though he does not seem to hold any rank past being the oldest still living son of the main house.
So in short, Ryuuji’s bad character is an advantage for him which he uses the best he can but it is not a front. He is abrasive in his words and deeds and a liar who is proud enough of being one to title himself the “number one liar” in a fight with the head youkai of XX-village after said youkai and its followers tried to trick him and his sister, triggering a ‘battle of lies’ that Ryuuji easily wins. On another occasion he lectures Yura on being too trusting and that deception is another fine technique that an onmyouji should be capable of using, a thing he proves nicely when he almost managed to end the all-out showdown of the Kyoto arc by deceiving Hagoromo Gitsune and sealing the Nue in one smooth move if an up to then neutral party wouldn’t have interfered.
All of this makes it difficult to see through his character as Ryuuji often contradicts himself. On one hand he shares his family’s black & white ideology which he brings up repeatedly and goes as far pointing out that he won’t accept any “grey” existences, yet he does not seem to hold any particular grudge against Rikuo who is a quarter-youkai or Akifusa, who is another Keikain onmyouji who relies on a dangerous technique of demonic possession in order to boost his power even though they were both candidates for inheriting the position as the next head of the family. If anything, he seems to consider Akifusa’s one-sided rivalry (the natural prodigy Akifusa against the studied genius Ryuuji) as silly and a potential weakness that could be extorted by the enemy and goes as far as chiding him for being too righteousness with getting too worked up over living the family motto and that it would make him blind to what’s really going on. Similarly, he was one of the first onmyouji who were ready to team up with the youkai of the Nura Clan in order to bring their shared enemy down and seems to have no problems to acknowledge that not all youkai are the same unlike most other onmyouji of his family. This doesn’t mean that he has to like them, though, as Ryuuji is shown liking precious little.
Instead he comes off as uncaring even in regards to his own family and only a massive destruction of the city he fought to protect managed to make him show real anger while he teases Yura even when she cries for the people they couldn’t save on another occasion. His relationship with her is another thing of beautiful contradiction as he keeps teasing, bullying and berating her on one side (and once even goes as far as attacking her with his shikigami without holding back), yet on the other side Ryuuji goes repeatedly out of his way and even risks his life in order to protect Yura. It has also been hinted at that protecting her is his main motive for teaming up with Mamiru in the first place.
Examples for such instances are when he switched with her fighting the possessed Akifusa even though it brought him a clear disadvantage during the fight or when he broke his arm when he protected her with his own body from the falling debris during the fight with Tsuchigumo just to later shielded her again in the final showdown with Hagoromo Gitsune and her forces which happened shortly after. Ryuuji also does not seem to be mad at her being proclaimed the next head of the family instead of what might have very likely been him just because she has the spiritual power to perform the one spell that is needed to defeat Hagoromo Gitsune and that he hasn’t enough spiritual power to do himself.
…However, on the other hand of the other hand, this can also be taken as Ryuuji simply deciding for survival over his pride when need calls it.
In a team with his siblings (Mamiru was adopted into the main family after developing powers) Ryuuji usually takes up the position as a Spartan leader who does whatever is necessary to reach the aim that they have set and who does not expect to be liked as long as the team works.
Tl;Dr: Ryuuji is a jerk with the heart of a jerk who will do absolutely whatever necessary to get what he considers the right goal. He doesn’t care about what people think about him and is something of a loner, but he is also reliable and diligent and would make for one damn fine bad guy if he didn’t somehow end up being born on the side of the good guys and sharing (at least some) of their goals. As a person Ryuuji is an very independent individual who doesn’t hold back for anybody and who always considers himself as the first and last authority over his actions and is generally a joy have around - as long as he happens to somebody else.
Character Abilities:
As an onmyouji Ryuuji possesses a decent amount of spiritual power that allows him to see things most humans cannot like youkai, spirits and their energy, and to use magic formations and shikigami. He can create barriers with the help of fudas, do incantations to seal and destroy evil and summon and control shikigami albeit, as he often points out, his powers of doing so are limited and it takes him time to prepare and perform the more powerful moves. Ryuuji makes up for his lack of raw power/talent through his cunning wits, sheer determination and professionalism. Due to spending most of his free time with studying he also possesses great knowledge of anything related to spirits and the like which he often uses to his advantage and which allows him to recognize Rikuo using a spirit blade right away for example.
His favorite skills are without doubt his knowledge of the psychological warfare and his skill at observing which allow him to predict a lot of his opponents moves and make him often appear dangerously genre-savvy though the latter is not always to his advantage as the end of the battle with Akifusa shows. Being proud of being a liar and trickster, Ryuuji often fights by feeding his opponent false information and always has an additional trap up his sleeve. He also likes to provoke them into making hasty mistakes. A nice example of this is during the showdown of the Kyoto arc when he staged a whole series of consecutive ruses, sneak attacks and ambushes just so that Hagoromo Gitsune would see through them and come after him, leaving the currently still unable to fight Nue unprotected for a long enough moment to complete the already prepared sealing spell against it. In another fight with an opponent that out-classed him power-wise by far he tricked him into what seemed a battle of stamina just so that he would hold still long enough that Ryuuji could create a magic seal around him which turned out to be his real attack.
Despite his often unpleasant character Ryuuji also somehow manages to be not only an excellent fighter but also a reliable leader who people will follow when he tells them to. He doesn’t let his personal feelings get in the way of his work and a lot of his natural authority comes from him being a full-blood professional who has no qualms with jumping over his shadow and doing things he dislikes if it means that ultimately the right thing happens; be it working with annoying ancestors that should be long dead and putting up with their antics or teaming up with one youkai clan in order to fight another who was trying to lay Kyoto to waste.
It is said an onmyouji’s shikigami and techniques reflect their character and it couldn’t be more true in Ryuuji’s case. Unlike Mamiru, who uses electricity-based offensive attacks, all of Ryuuji’s onmyou arts seems to be either based on water, poison or both and possess a nature that makes them perfect for deceit. His main shikigami is Gengen which he also calls Garo (‘ravenous wolf’, after its appearance as monstrous wolf) in order to trick his opponent into believing that it is an offensive shikigami even though it’s main purpose is to infiltrate the opponents body and then rage inside them as Ryuuji pleases, causing them lots of pain. It also serves the purpose of dousing the enemy in water which has made Ryuuji joke about changing their element alignment to water property repeatedly. He usually continues the joke by pointing out that Mamiru uses lightning and we all know how that goes, right? Ryuuji’s other shikigami include Gyogen, a fusion shikigami which appears as beautiful flying flowers that are made of water that corrodes everything it touches and Kyogen, a liquid shikigami that is able to create doppelgangers of whoever Ryuuji pleases and that contains a deadly poison that kills anybody who comes into contact with it within one minute unless the antidote is taken in time. Befitting the fact that Ryuuji tends to switch into a defending/supporting role in team-battles when he isn’t using his poisonous words his last known technique is a sealing-spell that allows him to use a stake the size of a minivan in order to seal a youkai into the ground. The seal is then powered from the strength the captured demon possesses and can be used to ward off other evil entities.
Last but not least comes that albeit small and rather mangy-looking, Ryuuji is physically quite fit, which comes mostly from the big disadvantage that his shikigami bring with them. Residing in water, they need to be brought along with him to allow him to fight, and that in no small amounts. This results in him constantly carrying enough water containers with him to make any suicide bomber jealous and get him some nice stamina.
Character Weaknesses:
Ryuuji's character and his absolute lack of an inclination to hide how terrible it is is a weakness of his. He is a liar who fights as dirty as he has to and he has no problems admitting to it just as he has no problems acting like an absolute jerk. He is no people person both private and during business and has no inclination to try, which makes it difficult for him to build personal bonds that aren't based on family-relations or recognition of skills. He also seems to be rather bad at showing that he cares about other people.
While Ryuuji often is called a genius amongst the onmyouji it is a rank that he has earned with studying and hard work rather than natural skill or talent. He often points out that compared to the rest of the Keikain upper echelon, his spiritual powers are weak and that using them exhausts him a lot faster while it also takes more time, especially in direct comparison to what his little sister can do. At the end of the day he also has the body of a vanilla human, which leaves him quite frail in comparison to his supernatural opponents.
A weakness of Ryuuji's water-based shikigami is that they require volume. In other words, from nothing comes nothing and if he wants to have a wolf-monster made up of water around he also needs to bring the water to make it all the time.
His last weak point is his size, or rather the lack thereof; even while wearing his clogs that have !high! heels Ryuuji only reaches up to 1,67m (5'5 3/4") and he does whatever he can to prevent people talking about his height without them. Adding insult to injury is that his constant partner and adoptive brother Mamiru stands at handsome 192 cm (6'3").

*vast knowledge and his abilities as a trickster
*knowledge about seals, onmyouji techniques and any other kind of knowhow he picked up in relevance to his job or school education
What are the weaknesses that your character will lose or gain in Soul Campaign?
*he can't use his spiritual powers or shikigami
Keeping the game's premise in mind, please give us a brief explanation of your plans for your character in Soul Campaign.
Ryuuji is a troublesome character. He is like the evil final boss with all those awesome techniques that you somehow got into your party without any power loss on his side and it's always a pleasure to see him in action - as long as he happens to other people. His black and white philosophy will make him both inclined to help with the war but will also ensure for him to stay troublesome, as Ryuuji has little faith in those in power unless they prove themselves capable over and over again. I think it will be very interesting to play this out and see where this 110% jerk will go within the setting of a game like SC. It will also be interesting to see how he will develop in the face of being forced to work with others at the same level, having to let people close for once.
If your character has difficulty communicating (or can't communicate at all, e.g., most animal characters), we require you to please elaborate on how you intend to treat this in the game. n/a
[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]
Why your character should be a Meister:
Ryuuji is a manipulative SOB to the core and is used to taking matters into his hands, bearing the responsibility of his life and that of others on his shoulders while doing so. He is a leader who fights first-row and has no patience and little faith in the abilities of others, at least as far as using their brain goes. Ryuuji's bossy personality makes him want to get involved first-hand and he has what it takes to back it that wish up: no matter the Weapon he will be able to figure out how to use it to the best of its skills and the situation at hand.
Meister Ability:
Soul Undercurrent -This ability enables the Meister to imbue any liquids within a 3m radius with the energy of their own soul, allowing them a small amount of control over them. The amount of control increases with the time the liquid is exposed to the influence of the Meister and on how much liquid they try to control.
[ SOUL INFORMATION ]
Soul Description: Brave, unsociable, practical, aim-oriented, independent. Cunning.
Soul Appearance: A gloomy-looking bluegreen soul that wears his trademark frown and hints of his bangs.
