Music and Sith

About a week or so ago, a friend of mine arranged some tickets for us to see Revenge of the Sith on Friday the 20th at 20h30 at Suncoast Casino (one of the ugliest buildings ever erected, but not bad inside). Around that time, Rooijan told me about a concert his brother's band, Lucid was in on Thursday the 19th, also at Suncoast. The plan was for a few rock bands to play with the Durban City Orchestra accompanying them.

Thursday arrived, cold and rainy. Around lunch time I got an sms from one of the guys who organised the DCO. "There's a concert on Friday we need a trombonist for. Are you available?"

After exchanging a few more smses, I discovered that the gig was from 19h00 to 20h00 at Suncoast and I would have to be there for a sound check at 17h30. While this was happening, I got an sms from Rooijan telling me that the concert we were going to see had been postponed due to rain.

Thus, I found myself on stage instead of in the audience. The music was great, although I had to sight-read in a key I'm not very familiar with. I'll take flats over sharps any day. We played for about an hour, swapping between rock bands and a singer. The audience wasn't huge, but that may have been due to the cold and the wind. Those who I spoke to afterwards enjoyed it immensely. The concert finished just in time for me to dump my trombone back in the car and meet the gang before we went in.

ObStarWars: I won't jump on the review bandwagon. I'll just say that although Revenge of the Sith can't match the original trilogy, it's a huge improvement on Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.

Back to the music. We had a rehearsal for our newly resurrected dixieland big band which fell apart last year when several key players moved away. We're doing a fundraising concert on Saturday 11 June at the UKZN Jazz Centre. I'm not sure how much the tickets will be, but it'll be worth coming to. We also decided that we'll have enough of a band on tour with us to organise a few big band gigs in the UK. Yay! Earning pounds playing music!
