Sitting in the sun waiting for the government

Mar 14, 2005 11:09

Warning, another rant follows. This time, however, it's not about the university.

The KZN Youth Wind Band was booked for a concert at 15h00 on Sunday. This meant we had to be there at 13h15 for a sound check, setting up and so on. As such, I organised a meeting/server installation/caffeinefest for Sunday morning.

At our Saturday morning rehearsal, we are informed that the Minister of Arts, Culture and Tourism who is supposed to be making a speech at the concert can only be there at 13h00 which means everything's moved ahead two hours. As such, I make several phone calls and send copious smses to reschedule the meeting for 15h30 (since we're scheduled to finish at 15h00).

Sunday arrives, I sleep in (yay!) and arrive at the concert venue in plenty of time. Setting up and sound check, etc. proceed as usual (only 15 minutes overtime), we get about 40 minutes to hunt down some lunch and we're back on stage at 12h55. 13h25 we're still waiting for the Minister. Long story short, we finish a half-hour late and I've been sitting in the sun. Lots of sunburn. I get to the meeting late and since it's at the university and I'm the only one in the group with access to the building everyone's been sitting around for nearly an hour.

The Minister did arrive eventually and said some nice things about us, so I'm not too irritated with him. I'm more annoyed with myself for not thinking "Government official, sitting in sun, give yourself an extra hour before having to be somewhere else and bring sunblock".
