Friday Pointless Poll: Rest Your Eyes, Deafen Your Ears

Feb 25, 2011 09:09

Turns out Smashwords has a partnership with Podiobooks, a site that allows you to self-produce audiobooks, the same idea (sorta) as self-publishing print books.

This would be more tempting for me if I didn't already know what my own voice sounds like...

Poll "Print is dead." -Dr. E. Spengler

silly, poll

I borrowed two books on discs from the local library at some point, and that leaft me with the idea that I don't like audiobooks...

Not being able to skim parts that bore me was pretty annoying.

Depends on what device you are using to listen. The Audible iPhone app allows speed listening. And podcast downloads have similar features. There are two things re audio books, the author and the reader if you don't like either the experience will fail.

audiobooks/podcasts are what keep me sane on my daily commute. Radio commercials drive me absolutely batshit crazy.

One of the advantages of living in Minneapolis, MN - KSJN, Minnesota Public Radio's local Classical channel. Most of the commercials are station identifications, with the occasional 'please give us money' tossed in. But the latter are highly concentrated into three annual sessions, each about three weeks long.

I read vastly faster than someone else and in any situation I might want to listen, I'm going to have trouble making out anyone else's words (and they'll distract me anyway). Audiobooks have never made much sense to me.

Well they work for me, mostly becuase I have a long commute. Listening to them at home makes no sense though.

I can't listen to audiobooks on my commute. I drive - I either miss vast chunks of the book, or I'm too distracted to be safe on the road.

I need them to keep my brain busy while I quilt or do housework. I have the entire set of both Amelia Peabody and Miles Vorkosigan (among others) in audio versions varying from tape to MP3, and I do an annual relisten of both series.
