Dear Jeremy:

Thank you for advising me of your support for efforts to reduce global warming. I appreciate your comments and share your assessment of the importance of addressing this issue sooner rather than later.
It is time for the United States must take a strong and active role in reducing practices that contribute to global warming. By relying more on energy conservation and expanding the use of non-polluting renewable energy sources, the United States not only can reduce contributing factors to global warming, but also provide leadership that other nations can follow. For example, I support increasing the fuel efficiency standards for automobiles, promoting the use of biodiesel and ethanol, implementing efficient conservation land-use policies, and creating incentives for private companies to explore the possibilities of other forms of renewable energy.

Also, I am a co-sponsor of the Climate Stewardship and Innovation Act introduced by Senators Lieberman and McCain which would mandate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. During recent Senate consideration of comprehensive energy legislation, I voted for this amendment offered by Senators McCain and Lieberman that would require industry to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions to 2000 levels by 2010. The Climate Stewardship and Innovation Act also provides funds to both develop innovative renewable technologies and assist American businesses and workers adopt clean energy technologies. A copy of the remarks I delivered on the floor of the Senate in support of the Climate Stewardship and Innovation Act are enclosed for your review.

Again, thank you for advising me of your view of the importance of global warming to our nation's future. While the McCain/Lieberman climate change amendment to the Senate energy bill was defeated by a vote of 60 to 38, be assured that we will be back to fight another day. This is an issue that we cannot afford to ignore.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama
United States Senator
