Don't Roll Those Bloodshot Eyes At Me

Lyrics from this fascinating song:

"You better shut your peepers before you bleed to death
chorus:
Don't roll those bloodshot eyes at me."

Now, I mentioned yesterday I've discovered this wonderful song from 1951 on some compilation by an artist named Wynonie Harris, "Bloodshot Eyes." The lyrics are muscular and envelope-pushing and fun.

I googled the title and the word `lyrics' and came up with Pat Benatar - Bloodshot Eyes - 1991. Same song. So apparently she remade it. I'm going to check out some of the other pages, but the one I took the above lyric from credits only Pat Benatar, as though she'd written the thing.

Let me see if someone else knows who wrote it.....

Okay, bless Wikipedia, I found it. Wynonie Harris' shouting-blues style version of the song was a big hit, but I think it was a country hit first for the song's composer: Hank Penny. Brilliant treasure from the past.
