Cotton Dress.

Many armchair linguists have theorized about the most beautiful words in the English language. Cellar door comes up a lot, although no one really knows who to attribute it to.

Elizabeth Gilbert devotes a significant portion of Eat Pray Love to discussing various favorite words in foreign languages. Hers is attraversiamo, meaning "let's cross over" in Italian. Her friend Giovanni's favorite word in English is "half assed." Luca Spaghetti's is "surrender."

Though my realization is in my native tongue and is influenced by the connotation of the words, my new favorite words in the English language are "cotton dress."

Is there anything more simple or perfect? For me it conjures pretty girls in cliched meadows or fields of wheat wearing perfectly fitted sundresses. Maybe they are more indie girls at music festivals or art fairs with a few well-placed tattoos and alternative lifestyle haircuts. These girls are usually smiling and twirling or both. They are happy to be alive and in their particular bodies.

The phonetics of the words appeal to me as well. Mostly the sharp "c" and double "t" of cotton as contrasted with the slithering "s" of dress. The two sounds are perfect foils to each other, making the other sound that much more distinct.

I want these cotton dress girls in my imagination to be me. I want them to be my girlfriend and everyone I know.

Cotton dress. For some reason it is so much better than satin dress or silk dress or lace dress. The innocence and beauty are unparalleled, my new favorite words.
