There’s a place in my neigbborhood called heaven street
It’s the peaceful place where the angels meet
Where children are playing in their bare feet
and hydrants are spraying, and cooling the heat
I wake up in the morning, to the sounds of laughter
Open my eyes to the world of happily ever after
The sun boasts again, ‘it’s a beautiful day’
Inviting all the neighborhood to come out and play
So I slip on some sandles, put on some shorts
Head downstairs, step outside, and stand on the porch
Everyone’s out, enjoying the sun
Even the adults partaking in summer fun
There’s a dominoe game, in the same old spot
Over there in the corner, in the shade, cause its hot
62 year old game pieces, played among peers
They love it so they’ve played the game for 62 years
Their faces are wrinkled, and furrow brow’d
One breaks the silence with a joke, they all laugh loud
Just then a huge pink blob catches my eye
A happy woman with balloons walks on by
A little boy, he’s maybe 3
Looks at her, and says shyly
‘Ky have one miss?’
She says ‘what do you say?’
He says please and then thank you
And then runs away
I step down from the porch
and breath in through my nose
im reminded of my hunger
by the smell of rising dough
I walk by some enticing
Popcorn in a kettle
But I finally settle
Upon a chewy yellow pretzel
Walking and talking
Eating and greeting
There’s a woman having coffee
And sitting there reading
There’s children screaming
With pure delight
Running around with squirt guns
Having a water fight
I was feeling warm
So I walked right through
They love to get the chance
To squirt me too
The water feels good
I continue my walk
I step around some little girls
With side walk chalk
A hop-scotch grid
Or some beautiful flowers
They’ll lay there drawing pictures
for countless hours
gazebos and bodega’s
shops and café’s too
fathers and mothers work all day
the bring their families food
But they are all happy
They know what they live for
Seeing them inspires me
To shop at their store
There’s a feeling these people give me
With they spirits everyday
I don’t have much to give
But I do it anyway
Theres an old man crossing the street with a cane
Theres a toddler with a melting treat, making a stain
Theres a middle aged woman, walking next to a great dane
And the children under the fire hydrant, playing in the rain
The kid with the pink balloon, have let it fly
Cause there it is, there it goes, disappearing in the sky
Taking all this in, I breathe out a sigh
Softly tears of happyness, swell up in my eye
I find it hard to find the words, to make it understood
The feeling of family in my neighborhood
Like being accepted into a brotherhood
Its just, it feels, I don’t know, good
Living here just cant be beat
Another wonderful day on heaven street.
