Farmer 7

Just finished washing the soil from my feet and knees, after spending most of the afternoon purchasing and planting plants. Nothing particularly new - two tomato plants (sungold and black plum), seven basils (six sweet and one purple), and flat parsley in the yard garden; salad mix with mesclun in one window box; and dill, rosemary, and Greek oregano in the other. But we are both a little giddy at the thought of fresh-picked-ten-seconds-ago herbs and tomatoes. Summer!

The window boxes will have proper drainage this year, thanks to an old flowerpot and a hammer, so I have high hopes for their output. I had to weed the garden, uprooting about ten square feet of colonial mint in the process, but the soil is nicely aerated and fertilized now.

All that, combined with grilling (and eating) burgers in the back yard, means I spent almost the whole day outside. Mmmm.

(N.B.: One of the farms represented at the Davis farmers' market was struck by a tornado last Wednesday. They had photos of the damage this week. Need some meat? Might be a nice time to buy from them.)
