The past 2 weeks at Training Command have been fantastic. If what I've learnt so far is any indication at all of what I'm going to do full-time after I graduate, then I can only say HELL YEAH. Good stuff man. The first week of lectures, which I initially thought were going to be dull, were instead fascinating. Although they were quite dry at times, I really enjoyed learning about the various statutes and laws and police powers in Singapore. Then we progressed to case study discussion, ie when can a police officer exert certain powers like drawing batons/firearms? When is a case of scratching a car considered mischief or vandalism? this sorta thing is vvv impt cos the degree of punishment for both crimes is vastly different.
And of course this week was totally different. Police Defenseive Tactics (PDT) and Firearms training. Very, very fun. We had a really good and funny instructor Norman who made the lessons very entertaining. T-batons are very, very dangerous weapons despite their initial puny appearance. There's a sort of art and grace to drawing them quickly and using them effectively. Damn those things hurt when used to armlock, as a huge bruise on my forearm testifies. But it was all good stuff learning what we could and could not do to defend ourselves.
Revolver training was da bomb. Our instructor was one Station Inspector Zain, who happens to be a shooter for the National Shooting team. Super lao jiao shooter. The revolver is one tricky bugger. A lot harder to shoot than a rifle because of the fact that you cant tuck it into your shoulder to absorb the recoil. The strength needed to squeeze off one round is also quite hefty, approximately 6kg. Lots of toll on the index finger. But that still doesnt change the fact that shooting is damn fun! The instructors were really friendly and nice to us despite us behaving like complete noobs and cocking up so often. If in Sar21 live range we would have knocked it down many many times liao. But after 4 days of intensive shooting, we had our classification shoot today, and I managed to get a marksman score. wahaha. in no small part thanks to the nifty laser on the taurus revolver which makes it so much easier to aim. A lifesaver on the quick-draw shots.
2 weeks down, 5 more to go. Can't wait to see what more is in store!
