So my unmitigated rage yesterday at Micro$oft and Bill Gates was unwarranted.
Well, it was warranted, but not for the reason I exploded.
I woke up yesterday after trying to get some modicum of sleep, and my computer was off. I leave my computer on 24/7, so this piqued my curiosity. I hit the power button and headed for my morning bathroom break.
When I returned, my computer was still trying to boot through the BIOS.
Oh jesus.
Because Windows had tried to install Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Vista on my computer only a few days ago, I naturally assumed that during the night, while I had been staring at my ceiling and listening to gaudy music on MTV, my automagic updates had taken over and installed the damned thing anyway.
So. Programming error.
I restarted the computer, intent on restoring it to a previous date and wiping out SP2. Beep, click click click...
...nothing on the screen.
Alright, that happens sometimes. I hard reboot the computer, thinking maybe switching the power directly off will flush the memory and enable a full restart.
Ah, there it is. I press F8...and the computer freezes.
Soft reboot. Maybe it just needs a soft kick in the pants.
Gets to the login screen for Vista...and freezes.
So I'm irate at this point. I have a project due for my geometry class that is on this hard drive and I need this computer to work. I break out the computer tools and crack open the case. I try every trick I know of to get this thing to bypass any programming errors and start up anyway.
Then I see it.
The bridge fan had melted off of the processor, rendering it overheated, and possibly scorching some of the other components of the motherboard.
I quite literally pulled off a bit of my motherboard that should have been cemented on like white on rice.
So I'm going to take it to the compdoc here in town in a few hours to see if she can pull any miracles. However, I'm fairly certain I'm going to have to buy a new motherboard, if not an entirely new computer, before the month is out.
Goddamn it.
