they go christmas present shopping. for drawingintheair, inspired by the lately music video.

“Infinite Christmas gift exchange” that winter means they wind up at an ornament shop on their afternoon off in Japan because Sungyeol is charmed by all the nutcrackers in the storefront and he manhandles Myungsoo into the shop. Myungsoo doesn’t really mind, though.

Sungyeol grabs a nutcracker and smiles as he works the lever to make the nutcracker’s little wooden jaw move up and down; it reminds Myungsoo of Dongwoo.

“You should give Dongwoo-hyung that,” Myungsoo remarks. Sungyeol furrows his brow a little, holding the nutcracker at arm’s length.

“You think? What would he do with it, though,” Sungyeol mutters, looking at Myungsoo with the corner of his lip scrunched up in skepticism.

“All of the things here are pretty useless too,” Myungsoo points out, “I mean, were you planning to give them toothpaste or something?” He jerks his thumb at the adjacent display row, boxes of trinkets and whimsical playthings in red and green and gold.

Sungyeol nods slowly, still contemplating, but Myungsoo jerks it out of his hands. “I’ll get it for Dongwoo-hyung, then,” he says, turning to look at a row of tree ornaments.

“Hey! I’m giving that to Dongwoo-hyung, you choose something else -“ Sungyeol reaches for the nutcracker, but Myungsoo dodges Sungyeol’s spindly arms and slips to the other side of the display row, away from Sungyeol’s reach. Sungyeol narrows his eyes at him.

“Too late,” Myungsoo says, deadpan. He knows the way his face is impassive gets on Sungyeol’s nerves.

Sungyeol grabs a trinket off the display in front of him and makes to throw it at Myungsoo; Myungsoo dodges, but he knows Sungyeol won’t throw it, anyway. Sungyeol twitches his nose at Myungsoo and a smirk eases onto Myungsoo’s lips.

Myungsoo grabs, in succession, a packet of tree-shaped sachets filled with lavender, a little plywood windmill, a snow globe, and a snowman-shaped coin box. Sungyeol’s eyes widen a bit at his haul.

“Who’s getting what?”

Myungsoo shrugs. “Dongwoo-hyung’s getting the nutcracker.”

“How are you buying presents without deciding who’s getting what?”

Myungsoo dumps all the trinkets on the counter and bows at the cashier. “It’s all the same, they’ll love whatever anyway.”

“You’re an awfully thoughtful person,” Sungyeol remarks, then tugs him over to where the wrapping materials are. Sungyeol unravels a length of ribbon from a spool and, with deft fingers, fashions a pretty bow. He holds it at the hollow of his throat and nods questioningly, his eyebrows raised, at Myungsoo.

Myungsoo just looks at him. Sungyeol rolls his eyes.

“I’m the present, dummy,” Sungyeol says, and skips over to the cashier counter. The cashier rings up Sungyeol’s length of ribbon together with Myungsoo’s purchases before Myungsoo can stop her.

They don’t know enough Japanese between the two of them to explain “we’ll pay separate, please”, so Myungsoo ends up having to pay for Sungyeol’s ribbon as well. Sungyeol grins and takes a great interest in the little Santa-shaped charms next to the counter as Myungsoo gets out his wallet.

“You owe me 350 yen,” Myungsoo tells Sungyeol as the cashier wraps Myungsoo’s gifts up in pretty paper. Sungyeol looks scandalized.

“It’s the season of giving, you know.”

“You can consider that your present, then,” Myungsoo tells him, “and you’ll actually be gifting the rest of them something I gave you. Talk about cheapskate.”

“Does this mean you weren’t planning to give me anything?” Sungyeol looks highly affronted.

“Yup.”

Myungsoo gets an elbow in his side for this.

“Owww. Now you really aren’t getting anything.” Myungsoo says, and trudges out of the store, his nicely wrapped gifts in hand. Sungyeol bounces after him and slings his arm over Myungsoo’s shoulder when they’re outside, their cheeks greeting the light December breeze.

“What were you planning to give me?” Sungyeol asks, grinning at Myungsoo.

“I was planning to give you the wrapping paper off Sungjong’s present, but you’re not getting that now.” Myungsoo adjusts the bag of gifts in his arms in an attempt to hide his smile.

“Yah, Kim Myungsoo,” Sungyeol shoves his shoulder, and Myungsoo just breaks out into a laugh.

Later, after they’ve all opened their presents and ooh-ed and aah-ed over the pretty things they got each other, Myungsoo climbs into bed with his array of Christmas trinkets and looks over at Sungyeol, who is trying to figure out the winding mechanism on a little wooden duck. Sungyeol’d whipped a little springy reindeer figurine out from nowhere during the gift exchange and thrust it into Myungsoo’s hand, clearly proud of his little surprise.

Myungsoo pulls out Sungyeol’s wrapped present from his backpack and tosses it onto Sungyeol’s bed. Sungyeol looks up in surprise and apparent glee.

“Is this mine?” Sungyeol asks, ripping the paper off in haste before Myungsoo can reply that no, he got it for the duck. The box falls on Sungyeol’s duvet as Sungyeol looks up, incredulous, at Myungsoo.

“You got me toothpaste?” Sungyeol’s face is contorted in disbelief. Myungsoo laughs.

“At least I got you something useful, right? I ran down just now while you were taking a shower, so you should be glad I took the trouble. Besides, toothpaste is minty. Christmas-y.” Myungsoo replies.

“You got Dongwoo-hyung a nutcracker, and you got me toothpaste?” Sungyeol’s mouth is wide open, and Myungsoo can’t help but burst into laughter. Sungyeol comes over and tackles Myungsoo on his bed, grabbing the reindeer he gave Myungsoo before and goes back to his bed, looking extremely offended.

There is such a sulk on Sungyeol’s face that it makes Myungsoo crack up till he’s rolling about clutching his tummy, but eventually he breaks and chucks the mittens he got back in Korea for Sungyeol at him.

(The next morning, Woohyun looks at Sungyeol as though he’s sprouting leaves out of his ears when he comes down for breakfast with mittens.)

merry christmas everyone! ♥
