just because

myungsoo finds everything he ever wanted, and then some, in sungyeol.
for jarnscye who saved this with her beta magic ♥

When the manager introduces Sungyeol to the six of them, telling them that he’ll be their seventh member, Myungsoo hears Hoya comment that night about Sungyeol’s dancing, Sunggyu about how it’ll take some time to get used to another person in their group, and Woohyun about how Sungyeol’s a unique one.

Myungsoo tries to remember Sungyeol’s face when he’s looking up at the peeling ceiling during the night in the dorms, but he really only remembers Sungyeol’s laugh, choppy, breathy and genuine.

---

They become good friends quickly. A little too quickly, Myungsoo thinks, but he doesn’t find it alarming. Sungyeol finds the way into his heart easily, even when he’s not even trying.

Myungsoo and Sungyeol dance, train, stick their legs out to trip each other, collapse over each other in the car in exhaustion, cry, sweat, and dream their way to debut. Sungyeol buries himself deeper into this little part inside Myungsoo every day, taking out bricks and building a little barricade around himself, releasing his infectious, silly laugh throughout.

When they finally debut, all of them break out into tears and smiles backstage, even Myungsoo. Sungyeol bumps into Myungsoo after blubbering and stumbling across the waiting room, and Myungsoo’s arms find themselves around Sungyeol.

Myungsoo’s not really a touchy-feely guy, but his arms just seem to kind of fit around Sungyeol. He doesn’t even know why.

---

“Did you think we did well? My face was just like, frozen or something. I don’t even know what I did on stage just now, seriously. My mind was this blank. Now I’m pretty glad they made us practice the dance five million times, ‘cause I think my limbs just moved of their own accord or something.”

“I know what you did,” Myungsoo looks over at Sungyeol, a hint of a smile on his face, “you danced wrongly. In the bridge.”

“Yah.” Sungyeol shoves him a little. “So did you, don’t think I didn’t notice.”

They laugh together, Sungyeol’s shoulder against Myungsoo’s, and Myungsoo’s suddenly taken with a memory, so much that he spaces out for a bit.

Sungyeol had been stuck doing extra dance practice with Myungsoo (“It’s all your fault, you tripped me,” Sungyeol had complained. “Didn’t,” Myungsoo had said, kneed the back of Sungyeol’s knees so he fell to the floor, just because he could), and for some reason when he looked over at Sungyeol dancing, giving a slight frown in concentration at the camera, dripping sweat, he could see the light reflecting a hint of a challenge in Sungyeol’s eyes. Myungsoo knew Sungyeol well enough by then to know that he’d been in acting in defiance towards the people that didn’t think Sungyeol would make it, defiant towards the world in general because Sungyeol’s not going to take “shit out of luck” lying down.

Myungsoo really admires that.

So he snakes a finger round to poke Sungyeol in the side. Sungyeol earns a little kick from Woohyun with his piercing scream (and Myungsoo’s laughter).

---

Myungsoo is a little taken aback when he sees his first of hate tweets on his Twitter account. He doesn’t mention it to anyone, not seeing the point. When he peeks out at the crowd backstage of Music Bank, for a second the crowd seems to turn into theatrical faces, some smiling, some cheering, some emotionless angry jeering, and he returns to the waiting room a little quieter. Of course Sungyeol notices.

“Yah.” Sungyeol pokes him in the foot with his toe. “What’s up with you?”

Myungsoo turns to look at him, eyes lingering on Sungyeol’s face for a tad too long. Myungsoo’s always found a bit of comfort in Sungyeol’s face, no matter how shitty his day had been. He thinks it’s probably the cheek fat.

Sungyeol recoils a little and gives Myungsoo a weird look. Myungsoo just laughs, and somewhere in that little part of him Sungyeol’s dug into, he feels a bit better.

(It’s not till later when Myungsoo tells Sungyeol what he really was upset about that he gets a one-armed hug and a rough “don’t look at stuff like that” from Sungyeol. And a smear of sweat by Sungyeol’s palm from his forehead, “just because”, but he doesn’t even take revenge for that.)

---

When the confetti rains down on them and Inspirits’ cheers ring in his ear, Myungsoo feels his heart about to burst and he decides that this is what it feels like to be validated. He notices Sungyeol doesn’t cry when they’re still on stage, though he really expected him to, but Myungsoo thinks it’s really why Sungyeol’s gotten so much of a hold on him. Sometimes he doesn’t know what he’s going to get with Sungyeol, and it keeps Myungsoo intrigued.

Then there’s also the part where Sungyeol makes Myungsoo laugh till he’s literally rolling on the floor, of course.

Sungyeol’s eyes start getting a little watery when they’re walking back into the car and Myungsoo starts laughing for some reason. Sungyeol whips his head round to look at Myungsoo and gives him a highly indignant glare, all while sniffling just a tad pathetically. Obviously the sniffling takes nothing away from the glare. Myungsoo just laughs harder, collapsing against Sungyeol when both of them get into the car.

Eventually they break out into a tickle fight and Sunggyu has to tell them to stop squirming, he was getting squashed.

Myungsoo looks around in the car, the six other people fighting to reach infinity hand-in-hand with him, and he’s really, really glad he has them to work together with. But (though he’d never admit this out loud to Sungyeol) especially Sungyeol.
