It's not just the school thing, though that's the most recent cherry on the pile currently threatening to drown the whole Republican-party-as-cake metaphor.
It's everything. It's the birthers, the death panels, the morons shouting for secession in Jody's former state. It's the level of basic disrespect. Not politics, but disrespect. It's every sign and every slogan that just gets reduced, ultimately to- "boy."
It's, hopefully, the death throes of a culture that should have been excised like a cancer and has been poisoning us for a very long time.
Sorry, strayed to poetry there. What I mean is that it's the failure of civility. I suppose we have 8 years of crap to thank for that- when you reduce or remove public debate and replace it with vacuum tube heads, all you get is public shouting to fill in the empty space.
On the actual topic of the school thing- I honestly don't see the problem. Who is the President? He's our representative. I've always seen the President as a reflection of the People, even more so than Congress (reflection of the States to me), and helping the President is... well... patriotic. World, community and school are all nice, but they're concepts, somewhat difficult to grasp at that age. Every kid imagines being the President. What an incredible thrill to be asked to lend a hand and word and voice to him? How important are *you* if the *PRESIDENT* wants your help?
