[series]: Final Fantasy XIII
[character]: Oerba Yun Fang
[character history / background]: ❝ Now, don't you worry. I'll come and find you, no matter where you go. ❞
[character abilities]:
Fang is a l'Cie, meaning she is a human that has been marked by a fal'Cie to fulfill a task called a Focus. In order to do this, l'Cie are imbued with magical powers. Fang specialises in the Commando, Sentinel and Saboteur roles. Commando is essentially physical fighting and some non-elemental magic, the delivering brutal force and launching the enemy into the air to make them cry bitter tears. Sentinel is kind of like a tank; taunting the enemy, taking the brunt of attacks and protecting the rest of the party by making themselves a meatshield. Saboteurs use spells to de-buff and place the target under negative status effects, making them easier to fight.

She can also summon an eidolon, which are beasts that appear to help l'Cie realise they have the strength to carry on when they are faced with an ~*~emotional crisis~*~. Fang's is a dragon mech called Bahamut that she can fly around on. It's very purple and shiny. He mostly does physical attacks and uses non-elemental magic, and when he switches in Gestault mode he can fly.

These supplement Fang's abilities as a normal human, physically very strong (the strongest out of the six playable characters, in fact) and fast, and extremely skilled with spears.

[character personality]:
Fang is simultaneously amazingly casual and operating with a burning intensity. The first impression you get when you see her-- well, to be honest, it's probably oh my god what a babe. Once you're done scraping your jaw off the ground, though, you'll be met with someone intelligent, irreverent, and despite a rough and ready attitude, incredibly caring.

She's quick-witted, and sharp - Fang is very good at thinking on her feet and taking the initiative in a tight situation, be it in battle or simply a matter of witty exchange. She's sarcastic, irreverent - nothing is safe from her mockery. If she likes you, you're likely to know because she's taking the time to poke fun at you, trying to prod you out of your shell, getting you to loosen up and have some fun. Or maybe you're just freakishly tall and she has the need to point that out to you. Fang is a basically a fun person to have around, even if she's likely to drive you crazy sometimes.

With her wit and humour, though, come a fierce temper. Falling prey to Fang's anger is a pretty dangerous thing, her emotions coming on strong and intense regardless of whether they're positive or negative. At one point, she is so angry over her comrades apparent decision to accept fate, that she turns against them and threatens to knock Cocoon out of the sky herself. She's like a storm when she gets emotional, and sometimes things can get out of control pretty fast.

Fang is also extremely blunt. Or, at least, she doesn't skirt around the issue. When she tells Lightning about Serah, she admits right after that the only reason she told Lightning was to make herself feel better. She might not be the gentlest touch, but at least she's honest, and can recover from getting a brutal backhand to the jaw with a cocky remark. Her bluntness is just another aspect of her pretty down to earth attitude, seeming to come with a lack of regard for personal space or privacy.

In order to really understand Fang, though, it's necessary to take into account Vanille, a childhood friend she met in an orphanage in their home village of Oerba. The two became close friends, while Fang is only 21, the fact is that she and Vanille spent five hundred years as crystals because of their dedication to one another. For Fang, life isn't life without Vanille, and everything else could go to Hell a thousand times over, so long as Vanille was all right. When Vanille is scared of their focus the first time around, Fang turns into Ragnarok alone, determined to take on a whole world so that Vanille can be scared the horror of it, and at the end of the game, she follows Vanille's lead to protect the others even though it can only end one way. For her, nothing else matters, and while the others in their l'Cie group do become family to her - she refers to them as such - dear friends who she would lay down her life for, Vanille is always going to be the number one person in her life. For some people, home is where the heart it, but for Fang, it's wherever Vanille happens to be that very second. The intensity of her emotions are that much more intense when Vanille is involved.

While Fang couldn't care less for the people of Cocoon early on, she does care about her family, and bands together with them to save Cocoon and fight their Focus.

[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: The beginning of chapter 12, just as our band of heroes are making their return to Cocoon.

[journal post]:
voice.

A whole new world, is it? Some vast new place to explore. ( Somehow, she doesn't sound too impressed. Bloody place can rot, for all she cares. )

Listen sharp. I've asked around, and all I've heard sounds like a bunch of tripe - stupidity not worth putting any stock in. ( . . . Still. )

Still, tripe or not, I'm here now. Mores the pity for you lot-- if so much as a hair is out of place on her head, you'll be wishing for a quick death. Understood? She's a delicate little thing, red hair, pigtails-- likely to cry at the drop of a hat. You tell me where she is, and you'll save yourselves a whole world of pain. The name's Vanille. ( She sounds it out carefully for you. )

Chop chop. I've got a whole lotta family to look for, and I haven't got all day. ( She sounds casual enough, but it's a clear threat. That “friendly tone” is definitely thrown off by the dangerous edge to her words. )

[third person / log sample]:
You didn't need to be some sort of bloody genius to know when the fan got hit. Fang realised when she was falling into day instead of night, when Bahamut wasn't steady underfoot. She didn't have time to think, to process the possibilities - had they been had by that hideous creep? Possible, maybe even likely, although consideration of that idea was shoved away to deal with the matter at hand. The matter of the fountain she was about to land in, to be most specific. It all happened in a matter of seconds, but she timed it precisely - rolling once she made contact, breaking the impact of the fall. It didn't do much to break the impact of her side, shoulder down to her thigh, as she rolled into the side of the bloody thing, but drenched and bruised was better than drenched and broken.

She stood almost immediately, snatching up the heavy metal spear that had made the descent with her, twisting around to get a good look at the terrain. Another city, although this didn't look like any part of Cocoon she'd managed to encounter just yet. The people were taking a look, to be sure, but not a one was flinching away or yelling at the sight of her brand.

Interesting. Too bad that interesting was right up there with a whole lotta bad ideas coming to mind. “Damn it,” she whispered harshly to herself, launching out of the fountain, looking for higher ground. Anywhere with a better view. “Vanille!” Her voice carried easily, drawing more looks. “Vanille, where are you?”

One man stopped, looked at her for a few beats too long. She was on him in a moment, one hand grabbing up his shirt and the other pressing the vicious blades of her spear against his throat. “You're gonna tell me where the others landed, or by whatever gods you pray to, I'm gonna have your guts for garters.”
