Rating: G
Group/Pairing: NEWS; Massu-centric, gen.
Warnings: Fluffiness? Perhaps a little nostalgic and bittersweet.
Notes: There were several ways I wanted to take this remix and I hope the ways I chose were not entirely too mismatched. Thanks to my quick beta! I hope you enjoy it~

FOUR
Massu was never one to gravitate towards limelight; he sort of just attracted attention wherever he went, but despite being a shy and sometimes awkward boy, the limelight suited him. He was never the most popular athlete in school, nor was he a brilliant student, but he was a star in his own right. He worked behind the scenes, paid close attention to detail that nobody else could see. But if there was one thing he had learned from his experiences, it was that the people surrounding him, supporting him, was the most important part of how he moved through the world.
It was while thinking this that Massu walked into NEWS’ dressing room to prepare for a photoshoot. He sported an oversized highlighter-yellow shirt with white skinny jeans etched with mazes all over it and he was wearing a weird dangling triangle earring thing to match his outfit.
Ryo happened to be there early and greeted him with a muttered ‘hey,’ not even looking up from the newspaper he was reading.
However, the brightness of Massu’s shirt was not so easily missed by Shige.
“I hope you’re not wearing that for the shoot, because the readers will be blinded.”
Massu gave him a joking death glare eliciting further mocking snickers from Shige.
Koyama walked in and patted Massu on the back. “Hey, so we’re having lunch after this, you wanna join us?”
“Sure, how about Nishikido-kun and Yamashita-kun?”
“Sorry dude, gotta head back to Osaka later. Uh, dunno what Pi’s doing, though -HEY TOMO,” Ryo yelled towards the hallway where Yamapi was taking a phone call. He poked his head through the door, his hand over the receiver and scowled. He made a shush face and stepped back out.
“Ok, well I’m assuming Tegoshi is coming along?” Shige asked.
“Yea, I’ll let him know when he gets here.”
“When who gets here?” Tegoshi asked as he sauntered in.
“Speak of the devil.”
“The one and only,” he smiled and bowed graciously. “So, what were you guys talking about?”
“Lunch,” Massu replied, “we’re attached today, so you’re basically obligated to join us.”
Tegoshi gave him a look. “Attached?”
“In other words, you have Tegomass duties later,” Ryo helped to translate.
Tegoshi “ah-ed” in comprehension and plopped onto the couch next to Ryo.
“Now that preparations are beginning for our LIVE! Concert, I’m really excited to see what we’ll come up with this time.”
Everyone nodded in agreement. Yamapi stepped in at this point and asked, “What did I miss?”
“You coming to lunch later?”
“Sorry, gotta head to the studio for recording.”
Massu’s smile waned, but Yamapi’s absence wasn’t going to damper his next announcement. “Did I tell you that Johnny’s letting me design the costumes this year?”
Ryo and Shige looked up from whatever they were doing and blinked at him for several moments. Koyama finally broke the ice with his laughter, “Please be nice to us, Masuda-kun.”
Yamapi followed suit and patted him on the back, “Don’t make me look bad.”
Tegoshi quietly snickered in the background as if saying, Now you know what I have to deal with.
“I can’t believe it’s already May. Koyama just had his birthday, our birthdays are coming up,” Massu said while pointing to himself and Shige, “and NEWS is just getting older.”
“Well, it’s going to happen. That’s called time,” Shige began to say as he was interrupted by Ryo belting “Sakura Girl” in the background, “Sakura no you na, kimi deshita. Haru no you na, koi deshita~”
“As I was saying,” Shige continued, “Growing older is natural and of course, NEWS is going to age too.”
“Yea, but it feels different. I don’t know how to describe it.”
“It’s ok,” Koyama chimed in, “Whether we’re 26, 24, or 7, we’ll make the best of it, right?”
THREE
“Sorry we’re late,” Koyama said as he and Shige sat down at the restaurant table.
“S’ok. I just got here myself. Got stuck in traffic on the way over.”
“Oh yeah, that was horrible too. I ended up bumping into Nakai-san in the hallway, so we chatted for a little bit.” Koyama explained, and Shige joined in stating, “Yea, and you know how they both love to talk.”
Koyama rolled his eyes. “Where’s Tegoshi?”
“I don’t know, he said he’d be here after practice.”
It wasn’t normal for Tegoshi to be late for anything, but they chalked it up to the traffic and turned their attentions to the menu.
“I was thinking about what you said earlier,” Massu said, “about growing older with NEWS. I’m really grateful that Johnny’s been giving us more responsibility.”
“Is this because you get to design our outfits this time?” Shige asked.
“It’s not just that. I think that NEWS is really growing up, like us, like a real person. NEWS is evolving as our members mature and change. It's becoming something we’ve made and not something that’s making us.”
"Massu, I didn't know you thought that way," Shige said.
Koyama nodded and smiled in return. "I think, hope, that NEWS will stay with us in our lives, the memories, each other, even after our time. It's definitely shaped who I am today."
They nodded in agreement. Massu’s phone vibrated on the table at that moment, startling them. “Oh, it’s Tegoshi. Hey, where are you?”
“Hey, I can’t make it to dinner tonight, practice ran over and the guys wanted to work on more things. Can we reschedule, say sorry to the guys for me.” He sounded out of breath and rushed.
“That’s not right, Tegoshi. You can’t just say that you’ll be here and change your mind.”
There was a pause in their conversation and Koyama and Shige could tell that this didn’t sound right.
“Well, I said I was sorry, Massu. I told you I was at practice and we have an important tournament coming up.” Tegoshi responded, a little taken aback.
“Important tournament, ok. I see. Well, good luck with that.” Massu stated curtly and hung up the phone.
“What’s wrong?” Koyama prompted.
“Nothing. Let’s just order.”
TWO
Massu found Tegoshi sitting on the edge of the giant empty stage at their next concert rehearsal, staring at his phone and concentrated in thought. He walked up to him, sitting down in silence. He took a few minutes reveling in the dark expanse of the arena, listening to the background noise of some staff discussing stage plans.
Tegoshi broke the ice and said, “I’m sorry for not making it to lunch the other day.”
“I’m sorry for getting upset, that really isn’t like me.” Massu sighed audibly, as if he had been holding these words in him for a long time.
“I should’ve known that you would be upset. How many years have we known each other?” Tegoshi shook his head.
“Honestly, I over reacted,” Massu admitted. He took a moment to reflect on how he wanted to say what was on his mind. “We’ve hit our fourth concert as NEWS and I don’t think it’s ever been this hard to get everyone in one spot. I know I should be used to it by now, but I just really missed this.” He waved his arms across the stage and looked, still in awe, of the dome-like structure.
“I don’t know how you still surprise me,” Tegoshi said looking sideways at his friend.
“Do I?” Massu responded in turn.
Tegoshi paused to think about that. “Yea, you’re full of surprises. Especially in your style,” he joked.
He nudged him with his shoulder. He looked at his fellow co-worker, friend, confidante who stuck it out despite their unique personalities, spending so much time in small quarters, and endless days together that would get anyone annoyed. Massu knew that Tegoshi was a friend he could call on, even when they were old and they were no longer Johnny’s.
“NEWS is home, isn’t it?” Tegoshi said out loud what they knew was already on their minds and they knew to be the truth.
ONE
“Ow, you just stepped on my foot,” Tegoshi whined.
“Shut up!” Ryo hissed back.
The dressing room was pitched black except for the light illuminating from the hallway. Footsteps could be heard in the distance, and getting closer was a familiar voice.
“I honestly think riding around on elephants again would be great. Ok, I’ll ask Tegoshi and see what he thinks. Ok, bye.” Massu put his phone back into his pocket and walked into the room without looking up.
Koyama flipped the lights on as everyone else jumped out from behind the giant couch.
“SURPRISE!”
Massu stood stock still with mouth agape, “wh -what is this?”
Koyama immediately move in for a giant hug. “What do you think it is?”
“Ahahha, my birthday?”
Yamapi walked up to him and punched him lightly on the arm. “Yeah, dude. Happy birthday.”
“Thanks, Yamashita-kun. Everyone...” Massu was kind of incoherent and slightly teary-eyed.
Tegoshi smiled at his partner in crime and walked over carefully with the twenty-four candle-lit cake. “Ok, now blow it all out or else your wish won’t come true.”
Everyone was met with a waft of smoke within 2.5 seconds. “As expected of Massu,” Shige quipped.
“It doesn’t really matter,” Massu replied as he looked around at his surrounding friends, “because my wish has already come true.”
