Remix for peroxidepest17

Title: Peace at the Office
Rating: PG
Group/Pairing: NEWS, and ShigePi-ish-friendship-like-eh?
Warnings: None, really.
Notes: 1,236 words. (To the original author) I loved the original story. I love all of your fics, really. I was going to remix the fic about NEWS and superpowers, but this seemed like the better decision… I took the general gist and the main plot from the original and extended it, is all. I probably butchered it; the original is so amazingly awesome I could never attempt to hold a candle to it. Mind=blown by your fics.
(General notes) It’s crack-y. Delightfully so, but nevertheless crack-y. And fluffy. Oh, the fluff. There’s a lot of it!

“They’re absolutely oblivious to who they are,” is Shige’s summary of his colleagues at Power News Group, after spending a few days at work. “They’re absolutely mad!”

Because the guy from HR is adorable and apparently likes taking up space on Shige’s lap while acting a bit more comfortable than a normal person would simply because it’s “peaceful” to be with Shige, the head copywriter is altogether too keen on maintaining good relations and lives in an alternate world which probably involves skipping through flower fields endlessly, the designer can’t tell cats from monkeys, and the vice president of the whole damn company is straight-up FEROCIOUS.

Not to mention that the CEO happens to be an attractive ex-idol who is, at the moment, MIA.

Shige begins to think that going through all those years in the prestigious and expensive Aoyama school system to graduate with a law major was a waste. Nothing in law school had prepared him for, well, this.

~~~~~~
It’s not bad, really, to be considered attractive enough to even work at this Fortune-500-quality office, considering that he’s surrounded by cute, cute, tall ‘n lanky, and darkly handsome people. It’s not bad to rank among these men. It’s not bad to have a great-paying job. It’s not bad to be able to represent an amazing company.
It’s just bad because Shige finds that everyone is insane. He supposes that if a company had perhaps ONE or TWO of these kinds of people, it’d be fine, but the problem is that THIS particular company has ALL OF THEM.
And Shige still hasn’t seen the CEO. It’s been a few days now, and Shige doesn’t think he can stand all the people bustling into his office and knocking over all of his work. He wants to make sure there is somebody in control of all this happy chaos.
~~~~~~
It’s a typical day at the office when Ryo, the VP, barges in, barking at Shige to go to court over some minor misdemeanor by a particularly obnoxious client. A manila file folder is thrown at Shige’s face, and he is left standing behind his desk as papers flutter down and the door swings to indicate Ryo’s departure.

‘Brilliant,’ Shige thinks. ‘It’s trial time already?’ when a very energetic Tegoshi bounds into his office, dismantling some of Shige’s books from a nearby shelf in the process. “Can you not?” Shige whispers under his breath with a pained look on his face, a look that Tegoshi apparently (and quite incorrectly) interprets as excitement.

“Shige is going to trial today? How exciting, I want to come watch!” With this, Tegoshi attempts to leap into Shige’s arms, but Shige’s arms refuse to do anything and remain slack. No matter; the HR cutie manages to drape himself on the taller man by some act of superhuman skill.

“I don’t think you can; visitors are not exactly encouraged in the courtroom-” Shige begins, but when Tegoshi develops a sad puppy face and turns this upward towards him, Shige falters and is unable to go on. “Erm… I mean, I think Ryo might have some work for you today, and I think it’s important that this company run smoothly, don’t you think?” He says this with little confidence that it’ll work, but then Koyama happens to walk in and agree with him. Shige sighs with relief, in the belief that the copywriter is his savior.

“Tegoshi! We’ll be working together today, yeah?” Koyama has a bright grin on his face, a grin that Tegoshi returns without once unlatching himself from Shige’s body.

Shige lets out a breath and smiles, then asks “what will you two be doing?” out of politeness, and in the hopes that this will prompt them to leave his office to do their actual work.

But to no avail.

“Why, we’re going to go down to the courthouse to watch Shige’s trial, of course! Ryo-chan says we have to make sure you do your job correctly!”

“…” The situation seems hopeless for Shige.

But, just when he thinks it can’t get ANY worse, Masuda runs in carrying a plastic zip bag marked “EVIDENCE.” When Masuda shoves it into Shige’s face, he feels compelled to wearily ask, “Masuda, what IS that?”

Masuda takes it out and lifts it up for all to see; it’s a neatly folded T-shirt meant to advertise a certain pop group with the group’s logo. “It’s the monkey shirt that the idols asked us to market! Ryo told me it was evidence or something and told me to give it to you!”

All three of the other men in the room look at the shirt; that logo is clearly a cat.

Shige deflates, and Ryo walks in to drag him to court.

~~~~~~
Shige begins to understand, defeatedly, that nobody at Power News Group is sane. Yet it’s a job that pays well, and will have a great impact on future careers. He just doesn’t think he can do it anymore. Ryo seems the closest to sane, but his lack of warmth and friendliness just makes him seem distant and untouchable.
But Shige is Shige, and he simply resumes work diligently, even though a part of him feels like choking up in desolation when he thinks about his tenure here.
The door creaks open.
Shige chides Tegoshi for bothering him without ever looking up from his papers, but the voice goes, “sorry, are you busy right now?” an unexpected voice asks.
“Oh! Um, hello, no, I’m not busy, how may I help you?” Shige knows he sounds rude and wishes that a hole would open up in the floor and swallow him. He surveys the man before him; it’s a thin man, perhaps the most attractive man in the building, and he also looks a bit bogged down. The man explains that he’s been away on business and wanted to finally meet Shige, and it all makes sense. It’s Mr. Boss-man, Yamashita-san.
They exchange some pleasantries, and then Yamashita asks a few questions that any boss would, questions about work, about how Shige likes it here, how things have been going, and if Shige has any questions. He does have some, he poses them, and discovers that his boss inherited the company, as opposed to having created some elitist, attractiveness-based advertising conglomerate.
Shige is fascinated by his boss’ smooth and simple demeanor; even when he is tired Shige can still respect him wholeheartedly. It’s nice, and his boss doesn’t feel threateningly boss-like.
‘In fact,’ Shige thinks, ‘I think he’s the most sane person I’ve met.’
They talk a bit more, and Shige begins to feel relaxed. Then, almost imperceptibly, Shige sees his boss’ shoulders relax as well. It’s a comforting feeling, to have a reasonably lucid human being simply speak with him and not at him, and share a weary feeling with him.
“So Tegoshi was right,” says Yamashita-san, after a bit of meditative silence.
“Hm?” Shige’s confused. “About what?”
“That it’s really peaceful to be with you.”
Yamashita’s very words, silently uttered with a regal grace, kind of strike something Shige. Something in his chest flutters, and it’s a nervous but sort of a nice feeling. Shige isn’t sure what it entails, but it’s not bad.
That choking feeling of desolation from earlier can’t be traced anywhere in Shige’s mind, and he thinks that working at Power News Group won’t be so bad after all.
