If you've been blind to the signs that are everywhere, this is what they read.
-NO on 8. Equality for all.
-YES on 8. Protect marriage.
Confusing because they both seem great? I don't know what you've been hearing, and I don't know everything that people are saying. But I hear things such as, "equal rights for everyone" or "why do you hate gay people" or "everyone should be allowed to get married" or "we won't teach kids about gay marriage."
--"equal rights for everyone"
If you read up about Proposition 8, you'll know that the proposition "provides that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." So basically, it's about the DEFINITION OF MARRIAGE. It does not deny any rights, because from what I understand, they have the same rights under their civil unions. If they're talking about benefits that they're not receiving, then they can pursue those benefits under their civil unions. benefits and rights... are DIFFERENT.
Will Prop 8 take away civil liberties? [taken from forprop8.com]
• No. The California Family Code says: Section 297.5. (a) "Registered domestic partners shall have the same rights, protections, and benefits, and shall be subject to the same responsibilities, obligations, and duties under law, whether they derive from statutes, administrative regulations, court rules, government policies, common law, or any other provisions or sources of law, as are granted to and imposed upon spouses."
• Prop 8 is not about rights under the law. The "rights" are already equivalent in CA. There are some differences in benefits under federal law, which we can alter by writing our Congressmen and taking action on the federal level. In California though, rights are equal. Prop 8 is about holding marriage to its traditional meaning as being between a man and a woman.
--"why do you hate gay people"
okay SERIOUSLY? i do NOT hate gay people. In fact, I happen to be close to some. people shouldn't assume that if someone is voting YES on 8... that they automatically hate gay people and are discriminating against them.
--"everyone should be allowed to get married"
God is the author of marriage. You can believe whatever you want to believe, but know the facts. the definition of marriage is "the social institution under which a man and woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments, religious ceremonies, etc." So to vote no on PROP 8 is to change the definition of marriage. which leads to....
--"we won't teach kids about gay marriage"
Tell me... if one of the vocabulary words for an elementary student is "marriage"... what definition would they learn/be taught? And tell me... The [no on 8 website] talks about how this goes "into our state constitution". Sooooooo correct me if I'm wrong, but do we not teach kids about the constitution anymore? I'm pretty sure we do.
This Tuesday, vote knowing what PROP 8 means. Don't believe everything you hear... READ about it yourself. Get the facts. Think about how it will affect you, your family, and everything you have come to know. Some people don't vote because they "like things the way they are"... well I hope that they know that in order to keep "things the way they are" you have to still vote to keep things a certain way.
I hope you know what you're in for.
