When Tali “officially” opened her lemonade stand (meaning she taped a piece of paper that said “open” on the stand’s sign) she was excited. She spent the first few minutes waiting for customers, imaging just how much money she would make today. Ten, fifteen, maybe even twenty!

Soon she spotted her first customer, an older man running by in a jogging suit.

“Excuse me Mr. would you like to buy some lemonade!?”

The older man stopped briefly but then shook his head and shook the water bottle in his hand.

“Oh okay I understand, sorry.”

With that, the man ran off. Okay so maybe he wasn’t going to be her first customer but hey the day was just starting. So surely more people will walk by.

As the minutes passed, more people walked on by but they either ignored Tali or gave some reason that they couldn’t buy her lemonade.

“Oh sorry I don’t have any change on me.”

“I’m not thirsty right now, maybe another time darling.”

“Aw aren’t you just cute but I’m afraid that I don’t have any money with right now.”

The young girl sat at her stand with a bored look on her face. She looked at her watch and realized that it had been half an hour since she opened and she hadn’t had a single customer.

“Hey there sweetheart how’s business?”

She looked to the side and saw her father walk toward the stand. In response to Arthur’s question, she let out a loud sigh and a disappointed look.

“It can’t be that bad can it?”

“No one wants to buy my lemonade! There were a few people who walked by but they weren’t interested. Daddy, am I doing something wrong?”

Arthur kneeled down to Tali, “No sweetie you’re doing fine. You just need to be patient. Tell you what, how about I be your first customer of the day?”

“No daddy, you can’t! I’m trying to make money for you. You said you needed more money to make the house a little bigger.”

He stared at Tali, surprised to hear this level of maturity from his young daughter. Arthur smiled and stood back up.

“Alright, I understand. Thank you sweetheart but don’t stay out here too long, once you hear me calling you for lunch, you’re coming right back in. Okay?”

“Okay.”

With that Tali continued keeping her eye out for potential customers. Surely someone in the neighborhood wouldn’t mind a nice cup of lemonade. But soon another half hour passed again without a single customer.

Tali sighed; it wouldn’t be fair to waste all of this lemonade if no one bought it. She worked all morning squeezing the lemons, pouring the sugar, mixing everything, and taste testing.

“Excuse me, sweetheart?”

Tali was pulled from her thoughts by a middle-aged couple at her stand.

“You looked a little bored so we came to give you a little business.” The woman said

“So how much for a cup?” asked the man

It took Tali a moment to realize that she finally had customers.

“O-oh um 25 cents per cup.”

The woman dug through her purse and pulled out two quarters. Tali then stood up and poured two cups of lemonade. The couple took their cups, thanked her, and walked off.

Tali looked at the two quarters on the stand… well it wasn’t quite the twenty dollars she imagined this morning but at least it was something. She picked the two coins and quickly ran into the house.

“Daddy! Daddy, daddy look what I got!”
