SUMMARY: Canon-compliant. Dean's thoughts as he sits beside his comatose brother, just before he summons "Ezekiel" to heal him from the inside.
Perspective is a funny thing.
It's amazing what goes through your head when all you have to do is sit beside your comatose brother and think. Sammy risked his life - again - doing something that could have saved the world --- again. And now he's lying here in a coma that the doctors give him little hope of ever coming out of.
And all I can think about is perspective.
To the monsters we hunt, we must be the most terrifying thing alive. Watch out for the Winchesters, Timmy. They'll kill you because of what you are.
To the people we help, we must seem like aliens. Blow into their lives, believe them, fight the monsters - blow out. Just like the way I used to describe thunderstorms to Sammy when he was about twelve.
They're one-night stand storms, Sammy. They show, they blow, they go.
Used to crack him up every time.
But yeah, we must seem like those. Show up, listen, fight, and then leave them to pick up the pieces of their lives and try to go on.
While we do the same thing.
But man, I wonder what we look like to our friends. Two kids, maybe. Two struggling kids, just trying to make our way in the world. I know that's how Cas looks at us sometimes.
I hope he's okay. I wonder why he isn't answering my prayers.
Who am I kidding. Our friends? All our friends are dead. All we have is each other.
And now there's just me. While he's laying there in that bed, in a coma from trying to save the world by closing the gates of Hell.
The only reason he didn't was I wasn't ready to let him die.
Now he's lying there - white walls, white bed, white gown, white-faced.... my little brother, surrounded by white.
He's the world's damned white knight and they don't even know it.
I just wish I knew of a way to save him.
