SUMMARY: Their dad gets hold of the brothers as they head to Bobby's. Which way will they decide to go?
NOTE: Dean's difficulty with phone numbers and particular sensory issues are specific to his particular flavour of Asperger's, not a generalisation of all of us who struggle with this.
FAMILY COMES FIRST
May, 2004
After a quick stop in Palo Alto for more clothing, the Winchester brothers started their long drive to South Dakota and their "uncle" Bobby's house.
Dean was dozing in the front seat as Sam drove. Sam seethed silently as the miles vanished under their wheels. After what he had just learned, he thought it was a good thing that Dad hadn't been in Jericho after all.
Because Sam might have killed him.
Sam was suddenly very glad his professors knew he was taking the summer off before finishing his junior year. One semester, then his senior year would kick in. Those two years of taking summer classes had put him so far ahead that he could take light loads and be there for Dean.
His brother needed him more than ever.
Dean had been right. Their father had abandoned him. The texts Sam had been receiving -- I'm fine, Dad is taking care of me -- had been sent by their father.
In reality, Dean had been alone for nearly a year. He'd drifted from town to town and worked easy hunting jobs, hustling pool or poker when the money ran low.
Nobody could beat Dean's poker face. He could just close into himself a little and his face and eyes would go utterly blank.
Their father had left Dean with only a note - and he had done it deliberately. He had apparently uncovered evidence that something was coming for Sam at Stanford, and he was using Dean as bait to get Sam away from there.
Dean was a 'thing' to their father. A weapon. A tool. Not a son.
And the heartbreaking thing was, Dean kept trying to get his father to just love him.
As they drove, Sam's phone vibrated. He slid it out and saw the name of the person he'd just gotten a text from.
D
He glanced over at Dean, then rolled down his window and flung his phone out of it.
He'd get a new phone in the morning. And he'd get Dean a new one, too. He'd load it with all the numbers they needed - including their dad's - since Dean couldn't remember phone numbers.
Dean opened his eyes as a buzz came from his jacket pocket, and Sam chuckled softly at himself.
Of course, Dean had gotten another phone after Dad had taken the one he texted Sam with. Their dad had called before Jericho, after all.
"Who is it?" he asked, as Dean read the text.
"Dad. Co-ordinates."
And Sam's knuckles turned white on the wheel.
