SPN: A Day of Firsts 1/1

Mar 26, 2012 19:33

Summary: For Sam, Dean's 20th birthday is a real day of firsts. For embroiderama's prompt on silverbullets: "There's a first time for everything."

It was Dean's 20th birthday, and they were alone as usual. Dad was off in another state, though he had called briefly to tell Dean he was thinking of him on his birthday.

Sam still couldn't get his mind around that - Dad was notorious about forgetting birthdays. He kept to himself that he felt that the fact that Dad was doing a job near Bobby Singer's might have had something to do with his sudden bout of memory when it came to his kids.

Sam couldn't afford a present, but he was determined to take care of Dean like Dean usually took care of him. So from the jump, today was a day of firsts for Sam.

It was the first time he brought Dean breakfast in bed. It was the first time he didn't give Dean crap about his music.

It was a Saturday, so Sam didn't have to go to school. But he did have to play in a soccer game that afternoon. He didn't let Dean have a chance to remind him what to do to get ready - he wrote it all down the night before and did it all himself before Dean had to remind him.

For the first time, Sam even cleaned their tiny rental all by himself.

"I could get used to this," Dean couldn't resist quipping.

"Just for your birthday," Sam shot back and they both laughed.

They lost the game, by just one point - which made it okay with Sam. He'd scored two of the home team's six points, so he was happy.

Once back at home, Sam showered and then got down to business. He had slipped the ingredients for this into Dean's grocery list last week, and his big brother had dutifully bought them, thinking they were from one of their dad's hare-brained cooking attempts.

Sam set about making Dean the perfect birthday dinner, complete with a homemade birthday cake. Chocolate - Dean's favourite.

At least, that was the intention. What actually happened was Sam's first cutting his own finger trying to chop vegetables instead of limbs. What actually happened was Sam's first kitchen fire.

What actually happened was Dean coming to his rescue and cleaning it up as Sam experienced still another first - his first time placing the call to Grant's Pizza Palace for two large pizzas (one three-meat and one half-vegetarian and half-pepperoni).

When the pizzas arrived, Dean found Sam had secretly ordered an entire apple pie - Mama Grant's special recipe - for his birthday.

Dean told Sam it ended up being one of the most memorable - and fun - birthdays ever.

And Dean preferred pie over cake ever since.
