SUMMARY: In this next installment of the "Different Roads" AU, we get glimpses into how the overall school year functions for Dean and Sam now that they're on their own and Dean is a teacher as well as a student.

SETTLING IN

Lily Rose had been an English teacher for nearly 12 years now. She was hard and strict, but if confronted with a special case, she would work with that student to the best of both their abilities.

The first week of school was always hectic, so Lily got there early. She was finishing up her planned presentation to the first class of the day, when there came a knock on her door.

She looked up and frowned to see a tall boy in jeans, button-down shirt over a black t-shirt and a leather jacket leaning into her classroom. "Mrs. Rose?" he asked with a charming smile. "Got a minute?"

Lily glanced up at the clock. A half hour until her first class. "Yes, actually. May I help you?"

He walked in, chuckling slightly. "That's right, you weren't here when I met with the teachers on the 21st. So you don't remember me. I'm Dean Winchester."

Her face shuttered and ice crept into her voice. "Winchester. The boy who thinks he's too good to attend my class?"

"No, ma'am! Not at all!" He sat on the corner of her desk, smiling at her. "The boy who realises he needs your class but has other obligations and can't attend your class."

Her head tilted slightly. "What other obligations?"

"Conflicts with other classes." She could hear the truth in his voice. "I have to have this class this year -- but I just simply can not be in two places at once."

"Ah, I know that feeling well." She found herself smiling. "It would seem I jumped to a very wrong conclusion."

Dean shook his head. "That's all right. People tend to look at me and draw that kind of conclusion all the time."

Eying him, Lily nodded. "So, what can I do for you, Dean?"

"Could I have my assignments for the week, please? Then next Monday morning I'll turn them all in and get next week's."

She broke into a broad grin and pulled out a sheet of paper. Opening her lesson plan book, she swiftly wrote down the daily assignments and weekly objectives. She handed the paper to him. "Your textbook is the blue one on the shelf."

He walked over and picked up one of the textbooks, smiling at her as he tucked the paper inside. "Thank you, Mrs. Rose. I'll see you Monday before school, then."

Lily nodded and said, with complete sincerity, "I'm looking forward to it." Then something struck her as he reached the door. "Dean Winchester, you said?"

He stopped and turned around. "Yes, ma'am."

"Are you the son of the new ASL teacher?"

He broke into a dazzling, completely real smile that touched his eyes. "No, ma'am. I am the new ASL teacher."

With that, he turned and walked out of her classroom, leaving Lily gaping after him. She had to have heard wrong.

Hadn't she?
