Summary: Davy didn't want to face today.

April, 1977

Davy didn't want to face today. Every day since Bess's murder was hard -- special occasions were even harder. And today was a very special occasion.

Today, Bess would have turned thirty years old.

Davy didn't want to talk to anyone today. Especially not to Peter and Micky. They meant well. Davy knew they did.

But they still had their wives.

Mike came the closest to understanding. He had had his wife torn away from him, too.

But she was still alive, and he had hope he'd see her again. Davy had no such hope. Dead was forever.

And Peter meant well - but Davy didn't share Peter's faith and words meant to comfort came across as painful reminders of what Davy had lost.

No, Davy hadn't wanted to face today. But he had.

He stood by her grave for a long time, telling her everything. Then he sat on the bench beside her grave and kept talking until he ran out of words.

When Mike came to pick him up, he found Davy asleep on the bench, his face streaked with tears.

Mike did a double-take when he saw Davy was tucked in underneath a patchwork quilt.

Bess's mother's quilt -- the one they had folded into her coffin.
