It had been an innocent comment from Pete that had sent Keith into this introspective mood.
John had bought a mansion in the Cotswilds called Quarwood. The Who were involved in packing up the Loft, since they were all moving in with him.
All this time, and they still couldn't live apart without illness overtaking them.
As the four of them were systematically dismantling the attic apartment Pete had inhabited, he had sat back on his heels, regarded them seriously and had said:
"You know, somehow I thought moving to a new home would be more of a wrench than it is. Sadder, or something."
And Keith had been turning his words over in his mind ever since. Pete was right. It should have felt more -- upheaval -- than it did.
But it didn't.
And it wasn't until the packing party had moved into John and Keith's room that the answer had reared up and socked Keith between the eyes.
Leaving the Loft wasn't such an upheaval because they weren't leaving home. Home wasn't embodied in the Loft. Or at Quarwood.
Home was embodied in the eight hands making light work of loading up the Loft's contents. Home was embodied in the teasing and cutting-up interspersed with the work.
Home -- for Keith and, as he'd find out later, the rest of the Who -- was each other.
Home was the family they had created.
