I'm sure everyone reading this has run across the term of approval "you win the internets." (See Jim Hines's
Striking A Pose post for a recent example of someone who won.)
I'm equally sure that everyone reading this has heard the phrase
"The internet is a series of tubes." These two phrases have been bouncing off of each other in my head for a long time. At some point the bouncing generated an idea: a sculpture of this series of tubes, so that when I felt someone had won the internets I'd be able to send them a picture of what they'd won.
The first idea for implementation I had was to take some clear tubing, twist it into shapes like a
child's bead maze, and fill the tubes with small interesting things.
Unfortunately I've been unable to find tubing that was large enough in diameter, clear, and flexible. I've been trying to figure out what else I could use, and at Arisia this year I finally stumbled across something.
Tubular crinoline. It's not perfectly clear, but it's close enough, and it has the other two characteristics. I'll need to play with some before I can figure out if I can just put stuff inside of it (maybe stitched to the fabric or reinforced with wire), or if I'll have to make a skeleton of some sort and then put the crinoline over it.
Also, if you want me to make you something this year I still have 4 slots left in the meme!
