So I just got a Facebook message from my old college roommate. I adore this girl, although we don't talk nearly as much as we should.
On the night of the election, in the radiated glow of happy, happy, joy, joy, I seem to vaguely recall her mentioning she would be coming to DC for Inauguration. Again, let me say that I love this girl. However, she just message-d me to ask if she and her boyfriend could crash at my place. (1) no details as to the actual dates (2) hello short notice (3) presumptuous much?
Anyway - for the 2-3 people who might actually look at this: thoughts at to what my response should be? I already have one person staying with me (he gave me lots of notice, asked first, etc.) I have a second person who asked already but may or may not be coming. She would have just slept in my bed w/ me so Jermaine could have the futon to himself. If roomie & her BF come, it isn't that huge of a deal for me, but it seems kind of rude to Jermaine who is flying out here and now might have to share his space.
There is much annoyance on the part of many of us DC types. Yes, this is a historic occasion. Yes, people are excited about it. But NO you can't just assume a free place to stay with NO NOTICE beforehand. I'm a generally hospitable person. I've had more people crash for weeks (or months) at a time on my sofas and floors and spare rooms than I can count. I believe firmly in couchsurfing and have had perfect strangers from around the world stay with me. Again, however, I have issues with the "oh btw, can I come stay with you" a week before the big event when it is obvious that either (1) your plans fell through and I'm your back up or (2) you thought you'd be able to get someplace but don't want to pay.
Ugha bugha.
On a happier note, I made a KICKASS dinner tonight for 8 of my closest friends. Seriously, 8 people in my itty bitty apartment. It was cozy. People brought: an extra chair; an extra fork; 3 extra plates. Yeah, I have odd assortments of stuff. I made chicken parmigiana; roasted broccoli with olive oil, garlic, and lemon; pasta w/ a light cream sauce and mushrooms; checkerboard cake covered in a dark chocolate ganache (awesome, awesome, awesome); and a coconut cake.
