I'll be brief since it's almost time for me to be off work (yay! my bed is calling me so loudly I can hear it across town). I just finished reading Heather Davis's The Clearing which I randomly checked out at work because the cover looked interesting. I wasn't disappointed. It's not the most mind-blowing book, but it certainly has a clever premise: a clearing in the middle of the woods in Washington where there's a rogue pocket of time housing/protecting a family from 1944. Cue modern girl Amy (with some dark secrets) stumbling onto the sweet and handsome Henry as she crosses the mist between her time and his. This is a very sweet book with characters a reader can really feel for. Amy is a complex girl, and my heart broke for her when the past she was so desperate to run away from was revealed. And Henry isn't without some demons of his own, demons that led him and his family to being trapped in the endless summer of Henry's 18th birthday.
While this book might not have been staggering in its complexity, it was certainly a very nice story. And towards the end I found it hard to stop reading because I was so eager to know how it would all work out. I especially loved the twist at the end (though it did drive me pretty bonkers when I finished the book because ambiguous endings drive me crazy...and also delight me. Hey! I never said I was sane, did I?)
So if you're looking for a nice YA read (or even if you're not YA but still like to read them, like me), check out The Clearing. It's a sweet book that definitely touched my heart.
