as an alumni, i feel i can honestly say nickel creek is not the right band for SoCo. Neither was Ben Folds for that matter. You can't expect a "college radio" band to be popular at a school where all the kids want to listen to Dave Matthews.
I completely agree. Ben Folds worked, though, because he's loud and fast and poppy enough for people who don't know who the hell he is to get into. You've got to be in the mood to enjoy Nickel Creek, and SoCo doesn't really put you in that mood. I'm sure they ate up the "rap cover group" (otherwise known as karaoke) they had tonight though. Silly Birmingham Southern.
I didn't make the Nickel Creek show, and now I'm glad I didn't. When people wouldn't shut the farg up during Ben Folds I nearly cried. I was close enough to Ben to tell he was visibly annoyed/upset. I wanted to scream "we're not all like this!". I don't think I could've stomached the same thing with Nickel Creek.
Jenn makes a good point, though. We saw Nickel Creek at Vandy under almost identical circumstances, and everybody was really attentive and into the show. WTF? Are BSC kids just philistines?
