Ooh, somebody else who even *knows* about Shackleton. I haven't seen the movie, but I've read about the expedition and my mother's taped a PBS series.

When my mother's really cold, all she can think of is Shackleton. *shiver shiver* :D

Oh do try to get a hold of it - it's wonderful. The DVD has all kinds of extras too. :> The Imax film was interesting too...

My brother is a Shackleton enthusiast, and we saw the Kenneth Branaugh version, but he didn't like it because they compressed the expedition too much. (He's a purist, like me.) But whenever someone complains of being cold, he promptly reminds us of what is really cold, and of what poor Shackleton and his men had to go through.

I've seen the DoDS in the library, but never bothered because it is really long and looks boring. Without spoiling it, can you tell me why I should rent it?

I agree with your GP #1...costumes costumes costumes!!

I've seen the Bourne movies too many times -- my dad has them and watches them over and over and over. I don't dislike spy dramas, though. (I'm afraid my own guilty pleasure would have to be Alias)

I meant the Branaugh version (I should have said!). It's condensed to be sure, as an dramatized version would have to be (none of the documentaries I’ve seen managed to get everything in either!) but I thought they did a good job of it. It's balanced, if anything I thought they were a little light once they got into the boats. The journey to Elephant Island and the stay there went really fast. Still I don't think I could have sat through it if they'd gone through every single step along the cold, starved, desperate way. I guess that is what I like best about the story, the deeper you delve the more amazing the story becomes. It just got worse and worse and worse and yet they made it ( ... )

Hi again!

Oh, I figured you meant the Branaugh movie version, and not a documentary. My brother has the documentary narrated by Liam Neeson, and it's quite fascinating. When we studied Antarctica one year, we were supposed to write papers on one of the explorers; I chose Robert Scott, and he chose Shackleton. (Nobody here likes Amundson very much!!) I prefer Scott, myself, but Antarctica is a fascinating subject. Those poor men...all they went through, and to have come so close!!

I'm sick though, my first trip to London we went to the Maritime museum in Greenwich. There was a whole exhibit on Scot and Shackleton but I had no idea what I was looking at. I'm sorry to hear that you're sick! Hopefully you'll recover quickly, but take it easy meanwhile ( ... )

It's been fun talking to you too! :> I haven't read anything about the Ra II but I was utterly fascinated by Kon-Tiki when I first read it in jr high. I’ve read it several times since then. I would love to see it someday. *adds to list* I've been lucky to see some of the world but I love traveling - I won't ever get enough of it ( ... )
