green shoes

I finally saw a good picture of Michelle's green shoes.  The gloves just knocked me out Tuesday.  Her whole inaugural ensemble just knocked me out.  Yellow, lace over wool (thank you for that info New York Times), smart choice for the weather.  Matching dress and coat.  Classic and practical cardigan for the luncheon (another layer!).  I don't care about trendy and rarely achieve put together but I love good fabrics and well made clothes.  Bold but socially appropriate, fashion at its best.

Sasha and Malia were in J. Crew.  NYT says that Michelle was wearing it lately too.  Secret confession.  I love J. Crew.  Good fabrics, good stitching, rich color, classic but pushing the trends, affordable.  I overlook the preppy because even pre-baby weight I was curvy and their pants actually fit right.  (If you're a girl, you know what I'm talking about.)

I was surprised by Michelle's romantic white gown with train for the balls, but as I was starting to think of the whole day as a wedding, the choice made sense.  I loved the way she looked at him when he was swearing the oath -- open, devoted, in love.

For a day, we were a household with the "TV" (streaming cnn.com) on continuously.  I wanted a longer honeymoon.  Can't we have a week or two of lunches and state dinners and concerts and parties?  But then Obama just keeps giving (transparency in government again, closing the torture centers), and I remember that it's not just about the "big day" but about how good day-to-day life can be with the right man.

I felt sorry for Laura Bush in her drab, polite gray.  My husband said, "I don't.  Where was she when her husband was making foreign policy decisions?"  I replied, "She should have made him a better man."
