Urine for a treat

In case you're wondering, I didn't come up with that extremely lame pun for my title (although late at night I lay in bed sleepless, wishing that one day, I too, would become a bearer of such lame puns)

What's this you say? Who or what is this delightful, loveable little fellow? Why, it is our good friend, our KIDNEY.

Lately, the kidney has grew on me and has become my favourite organ of the human body (Cue sarcasm - "Thanks, HUBS192!"). I love the kidney and all it's wonderful functions. Quoting my Hubs lab demonstrator, "The Kidney is so hardworking all the time and underrated, while the brain is so overrated yet we hardly use them at all!" Touche. Take that, brain!

The kidney is a wonderful organ which has 4 main functions.
1. It is an excretory organ of water, salts, metabolic wastes and foreign substances
2. A vital key player in Homeostasis, to keep us stable. Ahh, the good ol' Homeostasis. Central theme of the whole Health Sci Hubs paper. Without the kidneys, you would not be able to function properly and we would all die :) The kidney is thus in charge of Acid-Base balance and Electrolyte balance to keep us alive and striving.
3. It has the endocrine role (involving hormones which are either made, metabolised or functions in the kidney), such as Erythropoietin and Vit D --> Calcitriol
4. Metabolism. Amino acids --> Gluconeogenesis and NH3

The kidney is so thorough in filtering and taking back what is needed. It knows our needs. It is even so considerate of having two of themselves present in our bodies, even though we can function on one.

I love you, Kidney. <3

PS you have cool names, like Juxtaglomerular Apparatus and even cool disorder names, like Glomerulonephritis.

The picture above was taken from this site, called I Heart Guts. IT IS SO CUTE. I WOULD BUY THE WHOLE PLUSH SET IF I WERE RICH ENOUGH. Their Tee's are also cute too, just wish they had a better Kidney one though :/

This is what studying for the Hubs test does to me.
Quote James the RA, "Why are you studying so hard? It's only 5%!!!"
