Tillandsias, more popularly known as "air plants", have to be the simplest to grow of houseplants. Tillies gain their nutritional and water needs from the air. They don't root in soil so don't need a pot. You can place a tillie plant on your dresser top, attach it to your lamp, your headboard, a corkboard, a crystal, or hang it from wires like I do.
I have several clumps of various kinds of Tillandsia hanging on wires strung from a window curtain rod. I mist the plants a few times each day and then soak them in a bowl of distilled water once a week, with bromeliad fertilizer added every other week. That's it! The plants are growing, blooming, and producing off-shoots known as 'pups'.
There are hundreds of different varieties of Tillandsia. My personal favorite is the Tillandsia bulbosa. It has green rope-like leaves that twist out of its bulb at weird angles. It reminds me of the kraken monster on the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Tiny 'krakens' began growing out of the bulb after the mother plant bloomed.
So, if you're running out of shelf space for more houseplants then simply look up at the walls. You can have a jungle growing on your walls in no time.
