I received a text message during psych class yesterday from
callistazm inviting me to go see Star Trek with her and friends because they had an extra ticket. So of course I was down :D shuffled my schedule a little bit, and I was off to the 9:15 showing at Tinseltown. I arrived at 8pm and read until I met up with everyone. I was surprised to see Misha amongst the group- I rarely ever see him! So we waited for the person with our tickets to arrive, and then we went in. Got front row of the stadium seats, woo.
The nerd aura in the theater was amazing. And of course most of the audience was made up of RIT students :P I saw one of my old OA studs Tim, Chris from my Fraternity, Irish[eww], my TA for database and a bunch of other people I recognized from classes.
So they go to put on the film, and the screen freezes XD; Cue amusing commentary from the group, including a chorus of "KHAAAAAAAAAAN"s. We sat for a bit more; I read the Wizard of Oz and watched a bit of the 4th Doctor[The Horns of Nimon]. My ipod is love <3 After about 20-30 minutes the screen finally turned green. Then proceeded to show half of the "Up" trailer in greens and pinks. It righted itself out though after a little while.
I got excited when the GI Joe trailer popped up. I clapped for Eccleston XD The oooooonly reason I'm seeing that movie, tbqh. It was amusing that while the trailer was going on, the people around us started quoting the GI Joe PSAs.
And then it was movie time!
My disclaimer: Embarrassingly, I've seen very little Star Trek. I've picked up on pop culture references to it, but I've really only properly sat down and watched "The Trouble with Tribbles" =X I've seen a few episodes here and there from when Captain and I would stay up late chatting on AIM and he'd poke me to put it on TV, but it didn't really have my full attention. So going in I really don't have a deep knowledge of characters and all that.
I loved it. It was funny, it was dramatic, it was timey-whimey... Really an awesome time. I think Chris Pine had amazing comedic timing, but he also did really well when it was time for srs bsns. I adore Zachary Quinto, and he really didn't disappoint here. Simon Pegg was hilarious, as was Karl Urban. Pretty much everyone was fabulous. Even Winona Ryder, and I hate her guts.
The story was a bit crazy, but I think it worked out in the end. The plot moved really fast, so I didn't find myself with any bored periods, like I usually do with movies.
Greg Grunberg tweeted he had a cameo right before I went to see it, so I spent the whole movie trying to spot him[he said it was a really small part, so I assumed he'd be chilling in the background somewhere]. Of course I was kicking myself when I saw in the credits he played the stepfather.
So yeah. I want to see it again. I was pleased that on the way out I received a free movie ticket for the projector troubles. Of course now I have like 3 free movie tickets to different theaters I need to use up... Annnd I need to watch more Star Trek. It's not like I don't have the episodes, because I have a bunch of them sitting on my hard drive. It's just I don't have the time!
