Needs
"It's your team now."
These words kept echoing in his head for the past weeks. Ever since his boss and mentor decided to resign and pass the team leadership on to him, they kept repeating themselves; always accompanied by the worst fear of all: Not being ready to lead a team the way he did, not keeping up to his expectations, failing him.
Though there haven't been any hard cases lately, he spent most of the time in the office. Hoping that in some magic way, he would somehow absorb something to make him more like him. Sure he was a bastard sometimes, but only to get the best out of his team, to guide their energy on the right track. Making them as efffective as they didn't even dare thinking about. He would always push them a little further. It seemed like the days were easier when he was just Senior Field Agent. He could always hide any insecurities behind some childish behaviour. Playing tricks on his team mates was what he did best. And as long as he delivered good work besides that, no one would care.
Now Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo was sitting at his desk his face buried in his hands. Thinking of ways to get everything expected of him done properly. He didn't even have the time to get used to the fact he was now the Special Agent in charge. Taking a deep breath he got up and grabbed his stuff to find at least some sleep before he had to be back here.
He slung his backpack over his shoulder and made his way to the elevator when his eyes stopped at the figure leaning on the railing up on MTAC.
"Don't do that to yourself, Tony. He wouldn't have given the lead to you if he hadn't been sure you'll really do."
"That obvious, huh?" he replied, suddenly getting really nervous.
Jen Shepherd, Director of NCIS, made her way down the stair, silently taking in his appearance.
"When was the last time you really had something to eat?" she smiled at him.
"Ah..."
"Well, come on I'll fix us something and we can talk, if you want."
He just nodded and found himself an hour later in her appartement, enjoying some pasta and wine in companiable silence.
Jen took another sip before she admitted: "It's not easy for me either, Tony."
He was surprised at her revelation. He was aware they would end up talking about Gibbs but he never expected her to admit it to him.
"Don't look like that. Not the way you think."
"Sorry, but I know you two were more than just close. And I never really figured out if you picked up where you left in Paris. It was Paris, wasn't it?"
"I always wondered how you found out about that. I'm sure Jethro didn't tell you and neither did I. Not even Ziva knows about Gibbs and me." she grinned at him.
"Ha, you forgot I'm a trained investigator. Learnt from the best."
Jen just nodded and leaned back into the cushions taking another sip of her wine.
Tony, on the other end of the sofa, watched her intently, wondering what kind of memories were just running through her head. It must be some kind of memory watching the happy glint in her eyes.
She slightly turned her head to him. "No, we didn't."
The puzzled look let her assume he already forgot about his question. So she decided to clarify her answer. "We didn't pick up where we left in Paris. But he was still the best mentor I could ever get. And whenever I felt myself at the end of a one way street he would help me find a way out. Not by solving the case for me or making my decisions, but in diverting my view to another direction, I didn't see it from so far."
"Yeah, just like he did with us. He would never give us the result, but always the way to get there. Something that made him the best mentor for sure." Tony added in a whisper.
"And I don't know how to do without him backing me up, nudging me into the right direction." he sighed. "So far we only had easy cases since he left, nothing a probie couldn't solve. But it won't stay that way."
"You're just not used to that. But you do remember his gut never failed him. And it surely didn't start now when he made you team leader." Jen tried to assure him. Putting her glass on the table she slung her legs on the sofa, wrapping her arms around them.
"Do you know what I really miss?" Tony finally spoke again.
Jen just raised her brow questioningly.
"There's no one giving me a head slap when I overstep my boundaries. I'm afraid it will have worse consequences now. And it scares the hell out of me." Tony chuckled before his tone went more serious: "But most of all I fear not being able to keep the team together."
Jen kept her eyes on him all the time and at some point her hand started stroking his lower arm in a gesture of reassurance.
"Tony, I shouldn't tell you, but you were up for your own team for some time now. Remember the kid who held his classmates and Gibbs hostage? You were proving then that you are more than ready for your own team. I was speaking with Jethro about how you did there and he suggested giving you an own team as soon as the chance arose." Stilling her hand she waited for his reply.
"You don't have to say things like this to make me feel better, you know."
"I would never say something like that just to make you feel better and you know that damn well."
His lips tightly pressed together he searched for her eyes, before putting his left hand over her hand.
"Thank you. I know this goes way beyond your responsibilities and I really appreciate that. I think I should go now before I spoil all of your evening."
"Despite the fact that I am responsible of the well-being of my subordinates because only then they are capable of their best results, I hope you do believe me that you and all the others in your team are as much family to me as to Jethro."
Nodding his understanding he stood up heading for the door. He put on his coat and stood there at a loss of words. "Well, I guess I wish you a good night then and see you tomorrow."
"Yes, I guess you do. But you look like something else is bugging you. Spill it."
"Ah, well. I guess it's kinda inappropriate but... nevermind" he stopped mid-sentence.
"DiNozzo..."
"Would you mind me giving you a hug?" he asked insincere.
She never thought DiNozzo was that insincere about anything. And though she learnt that much about him so far, she was still surprised it went so deep.
"Come here." she opened her arms.
Clinging to one another they stood there, enjoying the sensation of being held.
When Tony pulled back, Jen gave him a little peck on the cheek. "Good night, Tony."
She didn't even have the time to end that sentence when she suddenly felt his mouth crashed to hers. Afterwards no one was able to tell who started, but no one really cared anyways.
In a matter of seconds their tongues were desperately seeking out the others mouth, willing to breathe life into the other and to send any insincerities into oblivion.
Their hands ripping off everything between them, while Tony pressed her back to the next wall. His mouth eagerly went down to bite the soft flesh of her neck. Moaning into his ear she directed him to her bedroom.
The love making more an act of desperation than the result of long-built sexual tension made it quick and straight to the point.

The clock woke Jen the next morning.
"Tony, wake up. We gotta go to work."
Stiffling another yawn he turned to face her. "Morning, Jenny."
A little smile graced her lips by the sound of her calling him Jenny, she didn't mind the least.
"Morning, Tony. Get up now." She demanded before she jumped out of bed.
"Ah, Jenny. About last night."
"Don't worry Tony. We're both adults, we both needed it. And I don't regret it. If that's what you meant." she slightly turned to him.
"I'm glad we're on the same side."
The END
Alright. Fire away...
Cheers,
