Sunday's LCCB concert went pretty well. All Christmas music. oy. I made one big mistake -- wasn't paying enough attention at the end of Sleigh Ride, and he puts a longer pause between the horse and the whipcrack than any other band I've played with, and I didn't wait long enough. I've played SR _so_ _many_ times, and I just got onto autopilot and messed up. ooops. (usually, it's "horse -beat- -beat- whipcrack - Bomp!", but he takes it "horse -beat- -beat- -beat- whipcrack- Bomp!) Word back from audience and J is that the concert went pretty well from the audience's vantage -- the band is really pretty good at what they do, which is 'good high school band'. (Unlike Farmington, which is more like 'concert band at a university with music majors', or 'wind symphony at a university without music majors'.) Sometime this week, I'm going to take the tenor sax in for a tuneup. He needed one before the season, but I found out on Friday of Labor Day weekend that they wanted me on tenor starting Tuesday, and that's not nearly enough time for a full tuneup. Better late than never, and it'll be nice to have him in better shape for next summer (based on last summer, where LCCB had three baris and one tenor, I'll probably be on tenor...).
Monday was the last actual FCB rehearsal before the concert Sunday - there's a stage rehearsal on Friday, but it's mostly a sound check and tricksy bits. He says we'll be out in just over an hour. I flailed more than usual. Some of it is probably that I'm not back by the tubas, and I'm still getting used to listening across the band for them - and the two pieces that I'm having the most trouble with are fast with a lot of tricky entrances that I need to make with the tubas.... Also flailed at Sleigh Ride, but that's because I was changing parts. And it was the first thing up in rehearsal and I wasn't used to the bari yet.
The parking lots were slippery after rehearsal, and there was snow falling all the way home. Not nearly as bad as last week, but I was the first car westbound on N Territorial so I was doing a lot of aiming between the trees/weeds/mailboxes because the road had an even coating of snow thick enough to obscure the lines. The freeways were clear and dry, though, so that was OK.
