These are meant to stimulate intelligent discussion.
What are your thoughts on affirmative action? Is it still a necessity? Have we as a society, painted ourselves into a corner? Should people be accepted into positions based solely on merit, vs. race? Discuss. Play nice.

There is a big difference between Affirmative Action and anti-discrimination laws.
Anti-discrimination laws say "judge people on their merit, not their race."
Affirmative action says "this group of people were discriminated against in the past and can not compete on a level playing field so we will discriminate in there favor, regardless of whether it is best for us or them."
A good example of AA being bad for the recipients is college admissions vs college dropout rates. Minority admissions are on par with or greater than minority population rates, but the drop out rate is much higher for minorities. A number of studies have shown that a large number of the minority students who drop out of college do so because they can't handle the work load expected by the college. A strong correlation was found between the lower admissions standard and the higher dropout rate.
Students who would have gotten in at a lower tier college, doing well and then either graduating or transferring to a higher tier school would instead drop out and not return.
The way to "ensure some sort of fairness for ALL people" is to evaluate all people using the same objective criteria. Take race out of the equation and judge people on their merits.
