I feel smart - I didn't get it was late '80s, but I couldn't get a lock on it while trying to place it in the 1940s-50s: the skirt seemed too short, too straight and kick pleats were rarely open like that - even for war-time it seemed too plain and skimpy but the overall look was also wrong for a '50s pencil skirt. The jacket seemed early '50s, and the hat - especially the grey tilt one - seemed more '40s... and then those heels!
Those heels are the giveaway - I see them now, and those are, like, totally, not 1940s or 1950s. 1980s revival!
ETA: Although, now I've gone and looked up the pattern and am like, totally, confused. Did they redo the art maybe? Cause those shoes are wrong and I stand by that! :-)
I found someone who has sewn it up and blogged about it (http://caseykoester.wordpress.com/tag/vogue-2885/)! The back kick pleat isn't open like it looks in the art, it has an underlap (more '40s); the skirt silhouette is a little fuller than the artwork shows; and it has a peaked waistband detail that I've seen in '40s stuff too. That might have been enough for me to be more confident about a wartime suit, but just goes to show you how close the looks were between the '40s and '80s.
I'm absolutely no expert, but though it had a 40s feel, the skirt shape didn't feel 40s to me. I could have seen 50s maybe for the jacket, but it also has monster shoulders, that once I saw someone say 80s, really clicked.
Yeah - I can see both! But the shoulders were sometimes massive in the 40s too. That suit I'm wearing in my most recent entry (where we went to see Public Enemies) is, I'm certain, 1940s, but the shoulders are so intimidating I haven't been able to wear the jacket outside of costume situations yet.
It really can be tough when looking at pictures - just a couple days ago I came very close to buying a '80s jacket that was mis-listed on ebay in the '40s section. It was only when I asked for the label and construction information that I clued in.
I dunno. The dispute was between the '40's and 50's. Maybe Vogue Retro patterns are not really Retro in that they're reviving patterns but in that they're supposed to FEEL Retro...and in fact, are modern.
I totally want to make this and wear it with a vintage fur stole with heads and tails and the green hat from this pattern...
