I just found out that an old, historic bridge over the Cedar River has been destroyed by the floods, and the impact of the Iowa flooding finally hit me. A gorgeous and friendly bridge where boaters and bikers would spend summers enjoying the view, food, and company is now gone. I had visited it many times, but I had only taken food and drinks from the local pub onto the bridge to eat once, as a celebration before I left Iowa. Never again.

http://tinyurl.com/47mbbt My friends and professors left in Iowa are all okay for now, but everything is just going to hell in a handbasket. I wish I could describe what's going on, but the only words I find are for the places and people closest to me, which doesn't begin to cover what's actually going on.
The floodwaters were supposed to crest today, and the prediction is now Tuesday. With scattered thunderstorms predicted for Sunday, who knows where it will go?
Someone has set up a volunteer and donation coordination site at
2008flood.org, but I'm not sure how long it'll take to get up on its feet. I tried to find info at the Red Cross website, with little luck. Maybe later.
And on top of this, all the Midwestern floodwaters will eventually be feeding into the Mississippi, which goes where? Right. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and all others with ties to the area, FB.
