Of fish...and my compulsion to save them...

A couple months ago I was at Wal*Mart, browsing around the pet section for some good toys for my cat and bunnies when I almost run head on into a group of teenagers. They're looking at these two small containers...they contained two male beta fish. The teens were talking about which one would kill the other in a fight, and pulling money out of their pockets to see if they could afford to buy both and a tank for them to fight in...

So what's a girl to do right? I grabbed both containers, a split tank (no fighting at my house), some beta food, and walked away.

Beta fish home and tanked...names need to be chosen. Alpha and Omega. Hehe. I'm a dork like that. Well, they're Beta fish right? Anyway...about a week goes by and Omega dies. He never looked very healthy, so I wasn't surprised. Alpha was living happily on my computer desk at home.

My husband decides Alpha is lonley. But we can't put him in the tank with our Barbs (one of which is now missing...) because they're fin biters. So he goes to the pet store, buys a 10 gallon tank, lots and lots of plants (to cut down on the currents, Betas hate currents), two catfish, and three FEMALE betas. Apparently Alpha was so lonely he needed a harem.

Hubby was reading that girl betas won't fight as long as they're in odd numbers, so that explains the three...but why buy girls? Well, boys fight, and Alpha was lonley. I argue that he could have bough other, non fin nipping fish, because now we have the risk of baby betas.

Meh...too late now I guess because they're in there. I was going to name the girls Pi, Gamma, Delta....but he said that was too dorky and to chose something else. Well, I was watching a re-run of Charmed so they became Prue, Piper, and Phoebe. Alpha is now called Cole, because he and Phoebe get along best.

Funniest thing is...and you'll only get this if you watch Charmed...Prue isn't looking good. We've separated her into Alpha's...err...Cole's old tank, where she pretty much just hovers at the top like she's gasping for air. And I think that's exactly what she's doing, what with Beta fish being air and water breathers...

But we may lost Prue soon...Hubby says he'll get me another girl...and I've already picked out her name if we end up having to. Page. Hehe...I'm SUCH a dork.
