The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi
Finally got to watch it and might I say I am BEYOND impressed by how well it played out. Never read the novels (cuz reading them penetrates the fun of suspense) so I can't make comparisons with how it lived up to expectations. But from just the movie itself I'm simply glad that Haruhi is still the good ol' Haruhi that I loved back when I was still 16. Endless Eight was an important feature, but too much of a thing is never good. Let's just say I'm glad I was able to regain my love for Haruhi and will continue to cross my fingers for further animated material of the franchise.
The movie.
Drama. Squee moments. Time-space complexities that resulted in loss of sleep and a bad headache the very next morning (suffering via the present time).
So first off. I must give KyoAni another pat on the back for the flawless animation work, music, creativity in pacing, and of course our amazing seiyuu for that extra touch of heart clenching oomph! Kyon's seiyuu has out done himself once again. Okay. Production quality aside, the STORY. Oh my god. The story. If you think Inception was deep, then you must get engrossed into Haruhi's world. It's a series of endless thought provoking moments one after another. A total brain teaser!
My concerns.
So Yuki altered the dimension so that Haruhi becomes a normal girl and all that alien/time traveler/esper nonsense crap doesn't exist. But then the time inconsistency of John Smith being able to meet young Haruhi? I'm rather confused by that. If Haruhi technically was never the godly one with powers to destroy the world then how on earth did Kyon get the opportunity to travel back in time with adult!Mikuru to meet up with young!Haruhi when aliens/time travelers/espers were never created in the first place? The possibility of the SOS dan coming together would not have even happened. Yet there was a time inconsistency of Kyon being able to time travel. At first I thought Yuki might have created a separate reality parallel to the one we're familiar with; but conversely speaking, the Yuki from 3 years ago stated that the Yuki 3 years later stole Haruhi's powers and only altered the dimension. If you think about it the reason why Haruhi is so special to the Data Information (something... uhh Yuki's organization) is because Haruhi has the ability to create aworld. Recall the last episode of season 1, she created a unique, separate, stand-alone entity where only she and Kyon existed. The original world was apparently still there. That said, it seems the ability to skip across worlds ceases to exist. Even with Mikuru, she can only guide you through time and nothing more. Hence the theory of there being 2 parallel worlds is improbable. Perhaps theoretically the future has already been predestined by some Kyon existing in the universe. It's inevitable that Kyon would eventually be given the opportunity to travel back in time to meet young!Haruhi and to fulfil the duty of keeping history consistent. My conclusion is that no matter how many times the time-space complexion may get altered, the meet-up of Haruhi and John Smith would serve as the saving grace to restore it back to its original state.
Which is why this line was so cute.
"Please take good care of John Smith that will shake up the world!" Kyon to young!Haruhi.
So how many of Mikuru are occupying the universe then? Technically I determine there's less than the number of time travel iterations assuming that adult!Mikuru always travels back to her institution after making time trips to meet up with Kyon. But to me it seems to violate the meaning of a time traveler, just a tad bit. A time traveler is a time traveler because he/she travels through time. Therefore, to be consistent I believe there should only be one of the aforesaid traveler. Yet that's not the case here. Gah.
One other thing I particularly enjoyed is all the plot twists and surprises thrown at you. Once a problem is resolved (temporarily) you get introduced to complications that make you even more confused than you were initially. For instance, how was it possible for Kyon and the gang to go shopping on Dec. 18th when we knew they were technically chilling in the club room (with the exception of Kyon who got ordered by Haruhi to do labour work). Hilariously enough Kyon even got pushed down the stairs by some yet to be introduced "phantom girl" and ended up being in a coma. Was is all to create an alibi of a set up just to get Kyon hospitalized while preventing Haruhi from raising her eyebrow at what seems to be a very suspicious injury from Kyon? My guess is that the Kyon/Yuki/Mikuru who saved the Kyon who attempted to shoot Yuki traveled back in time with dying!Kyon(or a dying turned healthy!Kyon) to Dec 18th in order to prevent hazardous mishaps. But if that were the case then how was it possible for Kyon to even go through all the crap that he did and get stabbed by Asakura eventually?
Because the future has already been engraved in stone?
After going back I realize I got the dates mixed up a bit. Haruhi deciding on hot pot was Dec 17th and the disappearance officially happened on the 18th. Soo... I guess Yuki healed Kyon, then traveled to Dec 18th where she pushed him off the stairs and voila. Makes perfect sense!
The confusion never stops... but let's talk about the squee moments! ;ADLSKFJA;SDLKFJAS;DFKJSAD;FLKJSAD;FLKSAJDF;LASKDJFL;SAKDFJ;LSDKFJ.
Kyon's insecurity of not being able to see Haruhi got me on the edge of my seat the whole time. And that part where he finally found out something about her from Tachibana? Huzzarh it was such a pleasing moment! Oh. And then when he finally saw her? His struggles to get through to her? KYAAAAAAAAAAA.
OKAY OKAY WHAT ABOUT THE WAY HE TOUCHED HER FACE AT THE ENDDDDD......
♥♥♥♥
There's so much I could say about this movie, but I think I'll conclude this very HaruhixKyon bias review with a token of: KYON I'M DARN PROUD OF YOU! The boy's growing up and is finally making decisions for himself (self-to-self soliloquy? GOLDEN MOMENT!). Except I hope he doesn't go crazy with all the kookyness that revolves around his cracky life... and stays put with loving our obnoxious Haruhi till the end of time.... which makes me wonder if there is one in Haruhi's universe. Hmm.. doubt it!
Man I could go on and on. From the characters to the small details like Kyon staring into empty space, everything was executed intricately and flawlessly. A definite emotional roller-coaster ride and one that I would like to line up for again. 10/10!
