Wow... KICK ASS concert. We just got back from Tori Amos at DAR constitution hall. Incredible. I have been waiting over 10 years to see her. I wish I had gone before. I don't have her newest album but I have everything elsea, including most of the B-sides. Here's the stuff she played off her first 6 albums, not quite in order..
Springtime of his voodoo
Scarlett's Walk
Hotel
Parasol
Spring Haze
Cornflake Girl
Bells for Her
Leather
Jackie's Strength
Pancake
1000 Oceans
Concertina
encore 1 - Precious Things
encore 2 - Hey Jupiter
Not necessarily all the songs I wanted to hear, I was surprised she did 3 songs off To Venus and Back... especially Concertina which I always thought of as underwhelming, in fact I was underwhelmed by To Venus and Back with the exception of 1000 Oceans. Of course everything she did tonight was great, but my faves were an awesome rendition of Bells for Her and a totally different take on Hey Jupiter. Springtime of his voodoo was a great second song and sounded much better than on the album. Parasol was not the song I would have picked from Beekeeper. I would have liked Mother Revolution or Mary of the Sea, or even Beekeeper. Cornflake girl and Precious things were of course awesome. I would have liked to have heard almost anything else off of From the Choirgirl Hotel, particularly Playboy Mommy, Northern Lad, Liquid Diamonds, or Iieee. I was so happy when she closed with Hey Jupiter because I was bummed there wasn't more off Boys for Pele.... I would love to hear that whole album live. As far as Scarlett's Walk goes, I would have liked to have heard Carbon, I Can't See New York, or Virginia, instead of Pancake. As far as B-sides, I would have liked to have heard Sugar or Honey.
Its amazing what strong associations I have with so many of these songs. The first two albums take me back to my first year at Brown, particularly the winter months... Bells for Her was so beautiful and stark, like so much of that album. Boys for Pele reminds me of Sophomore year, hanging out and taping a radio show with Reena... Choirgirl Hotel reminds me of the hot summer Rob and I spent on the third floor apartment of John St., where the air barely circulated and we got yelled at for leaving the fans on. More vague associations with To Venus and Back of living in our first apt. at Mabry St. in Tally... maybe thats why I was underwhelmed but that album. Then playing Scarlet's Walk over and over while I lived in the big house with the pool, and finally Beekeeper, my last somewhat doomed year in Tally.... Despite mixed reviews I definitely want to get the new album. I can only hope to have positive associations with it at this time in my life, but we'll see. No matter what, Tori has seen me through good times and bad.... moreso than Sara Mclachlan, who started out awesome but got sort of cheesy... and Ani Difranco who I absolutely adored until Up Up Up Up and never bought an album after that.
Ok, I am done. I would be interested to hear the opinions of other Tori afficiandos. You know who you are!
