Ever have a movie dry-spell? You know, when every movie you see for ages is mediocre or worse. It feels like I've been suffering from bad-movie-itis for months (maybe everything after seeing
Inception this summer, though that is a hard act to follow).
Well, that dry spell ended as of last week!
Last Sunday, we went to see
Red, a movie with an amazing cast (Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Karl Urban, Brian Cox, and the imitable Helen Mirren) and a really fun plot. Retired spies/assassins are being killed, and those threatened have to reunite to figure out why.
It was fun and surprising and Helen Mirren stole the show!

Last night, we finally had a chance to watch
(500) Days of Summer. I really liked it, though I'm glad I was a bit spoiled for the ending. The movie is more a quirky character study of Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character) than a romantic comedy.
Also, the editing and music choices were amazing.

Lastly, we just saw the animated
Megamind, about what a supervillain does once he's actually conquered his nemesis. It had such a smart script, great CG, and fabulous casting (Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, David Cross, and Brad Pitt).

And Sunday (11/14) we watched
Unstoppable. It was so exciting! A little slow to start, but once it got going it was just one thing after another. That train didn't want to stop, but that doesn't deter Denzel Washington & Chris Pine (on another train, the only ones able to go after the rogue un-manned train), Rosario Dawson (the head of a train yard, who collaborates with the local authorities and train personnel).
It's not perfect, Tony Scott, the director is overly fond of a shaky-cam style (especially at the beginning of the film) that I find irritating. But it's fun and exciting. We couldn't wait to go home and find out more about the real story it was based on...which seems to be basically the same except every danger (the speed of the train, the amount of dangerous chemicals onboard, etc) were multiplied by two or three...and they moved it from Ohio to Pennsylvania. ;)

I also have hope for the coming months, with
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (Nov. 19),
Tangled (Nov. 26),
TRON: Legacy (Dec. 17), and
The Green Hornet (Jan. 14).
I'm also curious about:
Unstoppable (Nov. 12), directed by Tony Scott and starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine (sort of Speed with trains). Just saw it, review above.
Skyline (Nov. 12), Independence Day-redux?
Gulliver's Travels (Dec. 22), starring Jack Black!?!
