I hear these women singing African folk chants
and clapping their hands
It is a high-alto with soft tones
and it's so pretty
It's draining down over the hill across the way through the fir trees
and seeping into the screen door of the porch
I have to go outside and stand under the moonlight and listen. Let the stars shine down.
I wanted so badly to walk over and just join them.
They sounded happy, peaceful and focused all at once.
This is the same type of singing I heard in The Constant Gardener
and in the latest ER where he goes to Darfur
so this is how I distinctly know its African
It took me a while to tune it in
But it sounded like butterflies flying
It was a nice gentle signal to me
After a tearful day
And I had to take a walk in my pjs
and walk out closer to that half-moon
shining so high up there
in the soft Georgia evening
I could feel the calm in the air
it was so silent and still
I felt the wet ground beneath my feet as mud and pine needles silently crinkled
I could see the glow of their light as their circle of chairs crammed their living room
I really wanted to crash their party
I felt like this single song that went fast and then got slower and more silent
and continued on for many blissful moments
sung by this group of earthly women
is the reason why this planet is still spinning
And after a few hours at one a.m. their light was still on and is still on now
And for whatever they're conspiring in their meeting of spiritualness
I hope it works
